Position Summary:
Our engineers are empowered to contribute to the full design of the electronics in our power tools, lithium-ion battery packs, and battery chargers. They have ownership in the development of design input documents, design of circuit schematics and PCB layouts, component selection and generation of BOMs, ordering parts, assembling and testing prototypes, firmware development, firmware testing, bench testing, writing design and test specs, supporting design verification testing prior to production, communicating with and supporting mass production.
The engineer will work closely with colleagues from other departments to define expectations of product functionality and ensure that the delivered product meets all aspects of the customer's requested specifications.
The candidate must have a can-do attitude, be willing to learn new technical skills, and be functional in both hardware and firmware. An ideal candidate would be comfortable in hands-on situations (e.g., PBCA rework, measurement equipment) and also be able approach problems from a theoretical perspective (e.g., simulation and calculations). Strong time-management skills and a production-focused mindset are required traits. Experience with power tools and home improvement / hobby work is a major plus.
What you will be doing:
• Full ownership of new projects; sense of accomplishment when "your" product is on store shelves
• Will work in a small group of electrical & embedded engineers (<15) with a collegial atmosphere
• Interact with component manufacturers to keep informed of new technologies and even help influence their direction
• We strive for constant improvement, both in our design processes and in employees' technical skills: At-work training (e.g., lunch & learns) is encouraged, and offsite trainings are typically available on a semi-annual basis.
• Opportunities for advancement in technical and managerial directions
• Excellent support for test equipment and materials needed to do our work
• Many opportunities are available, allowing engineers to grow and find a place on our team
• Great new facility: campus has on-site gym (free), cafeteria, outside acres to walk, jog and bike (mapped woods trail!), and participation in team-building extracurricular activities
What you will need:
• Minimum BS Electrical Engineering, BS Computer Engineering, or equivalent degree
• At least 5 years of relevant work experience
• Able to solve fundamental EE design circuits with ease (e.g., linear circuit analysis, determine function of small transistor circuits, op-amp design)
• Experience with LV (<40V) and MV (<100V) power electronics design -- MOSFETS, gate drives
• Proficiency with Printed Circuit Board layout and development tools, (e.g., Eagle, OrCAD, Altium)
• Able to set up and performing tests on hardware with test and measurement equipment -- oscilloscopes, multimeter, power supplies, etc.
• Familiarity and desire to do microcontroller firmware development in C
• Experience in prototyping and modifying circuits on dense PCB using SMT components
• Proficiency with SPICE modeling software such as LTSpice, Multisim, etc
• Comfortable and capable of explaining technical issues to technical and non-technical audiences in email, via powerpoint, and in meetings
• Able to travel to Asia as necessary: 0-5%
Nice to have:
• Familiarity with Li-Ion battery management techniques, BLDC control, or flyback charger design is a big plus.
• Thermal simulation and modelling for electronic components experience is a big plus
• Significant experience in embedded C, such as in the creation of "platform" firmware or experience working on larger FW projects within a team (e.g., use of flowcharts and other planning documents, good grasp of GIT or other VCS)
• Experience with 8-bit and 32-bit MCUs (e.g., Atmel, TI, Microchip, NXP, ST Micro, ARM M0/M0+)
