Position Summary

Athens Regional Library System has an immediate opening at the Athens-Clarke County Library for a librarian to serve as Collection Development Manager, providing specialized professional and technical assistance in collection management for the Athens Regional Library System. Daily work will be accomplished in the Athens-Clarke County Library, but occasional travel to all ARLS branches will be expected. Duties include, but are not limited to, selecting, receiving, processing, cataloging, and invoicing materials, monitoring budgets, and resolving vendor issues. The ideal candidate must be well-organized and detail-oriented; must be able to work independently and in a team environment; must be adaptable to varying job assignments. We seek an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible individual who proactively searches for opportunities to deliver quality library services that engage the community and exceed expectations. This position reports to the Collection Management Coordinator.
Minimum Training and Experience
Master of Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and at least two years of experience working in a library related to the area of assignment, or satisfactory combination of training and experience. Original cataloging experience preferred.
Essential Job Functions
The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments and schedules may change in the future.
• Coordinates acquisitions processes to meet and fulfill annual budgetary requirements and to maintain satisfactory flow of new materials into regional library collections.
• Manages regional materials budget.
• Serves as Team Leader for Collection Management Selection Team; selects library materials; and researches current consumer trends and analyzes current collections.
• Orders and receives materials; maintains documentation and reconciles invoices for all materials orders.
• Reports and resolves delivery issues, as well as damaged or unacceptable items and services.
• Assists Collection Management Coordinator with quality control of outsourced materials.
• Maintains excellent, detailed recording of information in written and electronic form; compiles and submits regular, required reports and business forms.
• Orders, claims, routes, and maintains files of current periodicals and subscriptions.
• Fields patron purchase requests, as well as answers questions regarding collection development policies and procedures.
• Establishes and maintains relationships with current and potential vendors.
• Provides support in many areas of daily department and library operations, including organizing and reshelving materials; routing information; answering telephones and operating office equipment.
• Assists Collection Management Coordinator with copy and original cataloging, ILS maintenance projects, and other cataloging duties as needed.
• Assists Collection Management Coordinator with regular weeding responsibilities.
• Manages disposition of donated materials in branches; assists patrons with donations.
• Manages honor and memorial materials donations for ARLS.
• Processes library materials for circulation by stamping, covering, placing labels, routing, etc.
• Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
Supervisory Responsibility:
• Supervises Collection Management Technician and Collection Management Assistant, including prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a safe work environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
• Trains and oversees library volunteers as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Specialized knowledge of library collection development principles and of selection resources.
• Personal computer proficiency as necessary in the completion of daily tasks; ability to adapt to new technologies in a timely manner.
• Knowledge of budgeting principles and the mathematical skills to maintain financial reports.
• Strong vendor relations skills.
• Excellent working knowledge of MARC, AACR2/RDA, DDC23, LCSH.
• Proficiency in PINES Evergreen ILS.
• Ability and desire to work with details in a highly efficient and accurate manner.
• Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
• Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills; ability to use independent judgment and discretion.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with management, employees, members of the general public, Friends of the Library organizations, and other materials donors; ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner.
• Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
• Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
• Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Georgia driver’s license.
