AMERICAN MUNICIPAL POWER, INC. JOB DESCRIPTION This position will be posted from 7/1/22 - 7/17/22 This position can be filled as an Operator I or Operator II depending on qualifications Position Title: Plant Operator I Reports To: Operations and Maintenance Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Basic Functions: Responsible for the overall daily monitoring and maintenance of the hydroelectric plan. Essential Functions: 1. Functions as a control room operator. Assists or performs the responsibilities associated with starting and stopping units, coordinating unit discharge rates, monitoring and maintaining upstream pool in cooperation with the Army Corps of Engineers, records and reports operating information such as hourly readings of distribution metering, river flow, unit blade positions, unit temperatures, and dissolved oxygen monitoring equipment. 2. Cleans debris from intake racks utilizing the trash rake, log grabber and other equipment to provide for the maximum head for the units. 3. Acknowledges and responds to faults or alarms from the Plant Control Switchboard and takes appropriate action to clear the associated alarms. 4. Assists in the performance of plant maintenance on equipment throughout the plant including, but not limited to pumps, motors, fans, valves and instrumentation. 5. Assists with the operation of the oil purification system on a scheduled basis. 6. Prepares and updates the Daily Log of work performed including creating, performing and updating work orders and inventory in the Maximo system. 7. Recommends improvements in operation manuals, plant procedures, preventive maintenance plans, and plant safety including insuring that Supervisor and AMP’s safety staff is aware and has been consulted with regard to ongoing maintenance and outage related work activities of staff and outside contractors. Participates in Job Hazard Analysis and pre and post safety briefings and safety discussions for work activities. 8. Executes established environmental and regulatory compliance procedures, ensuring compliance with various State and Federal agencies. 9. Performs work necessary to maintain other plant facilities including cleaning, trash removal and other tasks as assigned. 10. Assists with scheduling and coordinating the delivery of power from the Hydroelectric Plant to grid and ensures that the maximum power is delivered on a minimal interruption basis. 11. Prepares and updates a Daily Log of work performed, visitors, and general upkeep of the plant. 12. Picks up and delivers plant equipment supplies as needed. 13. Performs other assigned duties. Knowledge, Skills, & Qualifications: 1. Must have a two or four year degree in mechanical or electrical engineering; or Engineering technology degree and two years of experience in plant operations; or a minimum of three to five years’ experience in power plant operations and/or maintenance. 2. Demonstrates thorough knowledge power plant equipment and principles of operation. 3. Must demonstrate the ability to read instruction manuals, blueprints, and schematics. 4. Must have knowledge of the operation and maintenance of control devices and recording/metering devices common to power plants. 5. Experience with programmable logic controllers is a plus. 6. Must have good problem solving skills, and basic mechanical and electrical skills. 7. Must have the ability to follow complex oral and written instructions and react calmly during plant emergencies. 8. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers 9. Welding certification is a plus. Position Title: Plant Operator II Reports To: Operations and Maintenance Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Basic Functions: Responsible for the overall daily monitoring and maintenance of the hydroelectric plant. Essential Functions: 1. Functions as control room operator, starting and stopping units, coordinating unit discharge rates with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Lockmaster staff, monitoring and maintaining upstream pool elevations, taking and reporting hourly readings of various plant equipment and systems. 2. Cleans debris from intake racks utilizing the trash rake, log grabber and other equipment to maintain maximum available differential head water to the units. Coordinates the flushing of debris through dam gates with the USACE staff. 3. Acknowledges and responds to alarms and faults from the Plant Control Systems and takes the appropriate action to clear the alarms or faults. 4. Performs maintenance on equipment throughout the plant including but not limited to pumps, motors, fans, valves and other equipment and instrumentation. 5. Performs work necessary to maintain plant facilities including cleaning, trash removal, painting and other tasks as assigned to maintain the general upkeep of the plant facilities. 6. Communicates with the AMP Energy Control Center to coordinate scheduling and delivery of power from the plant while ensuring the maximum power is delivered on a minimal interruption basis. 7. Prepares and updates the Daily Log of work performed including creating, performing and updating work orders and inventory in the Maximo system. 8. Provides recognized leadership in forced outages including communication, assessment, and response. Planned outage duties may include , detailed planning and preparation, job briefings, contractor oversight, optimization, rental equipment, scheduling and clean up. 9. Recommends improvements in operation manuals, plant procedures, preventive maintenance plans, and plant safety including insuring that Supervisor and AMP’s safety staff is aware and has been consulted with regard to ongoing maintenance and outage related work activities of staff and outside contractors. Participates in Job Hazard Analysis and pre and post safety briefings and safety discussions for work activities. 10. Mentors and assists with training Operator 1 positions to improve their skills and abilities and O&M experience. 11. Provides supervisory assistance in the absence of the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor and provide fill in services as requested by the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor. 12. Is responsible for writing outage and maintenance related summary reports for the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor. 13. Executes established environmental and regulatory compliance procedures, ensuring compliance with various State and Federal agencies. 14. Coordinates with various contractors performing transmission line maintenance and vegetation control ensuring maximum line availability. 15. Understands Dam Safety potential failure modes and emergency action plans. 16. Performs all other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications: 1. Must have a minimum of a two (2) year technical degree and two (2) years of experience in “hydro plant” operation and maintenance; or a two (2) year technical degree and one (1) year of experience in “hydro plant” operation and maintenance plus four (4) years of experience in any type of plant operation and maintenance; or a minimum of one (1) year of experience in “hydro plant” operation and maintenance plus four (4) years of experience in “power plant” operation and maintenance. 2. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of plant equipment and principles of plant operations. 3. Has the ability to read instruction manuals, drawings and schematics. 4. Must have good problem solving ability and basic mechanical and electrical skills. 5. Must have the ability to follow complex oral and written instructions and react calmly during plant emergencies. 6. Must have knowledge of the operation and maintenance of control devices and recording / metering devices common to power plants. 7. Must have good oral and written communication skills.
