Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator RN, under the direction of the Trauma Program Manager, is responsible for coordination and facilitation of Injury Prevention Programs. Responsible for the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of age-specific, trauma prevention/education/outreach programs to improve regional outcomes from major trauma by dissemination of knowledge and expertise regarding care of the injured patient.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
• Utilizes trauma registry and community trauma data to identify the pattern, frequency, and risks for injury prevention within the hospital and community. Develops and annually updates the trauma injury prevention program plan for the institution and the community utilizing hospital, local, regional, national statistics and upcoming legislation.
• Develops a yearly calendar of facility, local, regional, state and/or national injury prevention activities, and actively participates in injury prevention related committees or organizations. Maintains a log of injury prevention activities and reports to the trauma operational committee.
• Oversees alcohol screening to identify patients who are problem drinkers as indicated by the American College of Surgeons standards.
• Identifies appropriate funding sources such as grants and completes application process to foster injury prevention program development and implementation.
• Participates in the presentation and publication of trauma injury prevention data, including designing and coordinating production of educational materials such as flyers, brochures, fact sheets, and newsletters related to injury prevention. Manages materials and other resources in a cost-effective manner.
• Develops and maintains the trauma website in collaboration with the Trauma Program Manager as applicable, develops and maintains social media sites, such as a Trauma Blog, Trauma Facebook site, with frequent updates and postings as applicable.
• Participates in multidisciplinary injury prevention research aimed at reducing identified injuries.
• Recommends and assists in the development of continuing education programs based on assessment of the unit needs, including hospital inservices related to trauma patient care quality issues, trauma monthly CME lecture series, and activities for EMS week, Trauma week, and other awareness/outreach opportunities.
• Serves as a subject matter expert for media information related to injury prevention educational outreach and public service messages.
• Develops and coordinates CME/CE for PI conferences, monthly CME lecture series and other related educational opportunities such as physician CME activities in accordance with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) standards. Maintains course standards according to organization company guidelines.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
• Advanced understanding of Trauma Injury Prevention practice, terminology, and standards.
• Knowledge and understanding of nursing and patient care standards and procedures.
• Basic understanding of Epidemiology terminology, theories and applications.
• Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care applicable to the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of medical terminology; principles and practices of health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention and management; medications and drugs, common dosages, their physical and physiological effects, and possible adverse reactions.
• Knowledge of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
• Must be able to communicate thoughts clearly, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to effectively use a variety of teaching methods.
• Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide-range of constituencies.
• Must have critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to understand, optimize and document complex processes.
• General computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.
• Trauma/Emergency/Critical Care experience preferred.
• Teaching and leadership experience preferred.
• Knowledge of communications and public relations techniques preferred.

Registered Nurse (RN)
Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
