RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach fellows, residents, and medical students.
Provides prenatal and preconception genetic counseling both in person and via telehealth to patients referred for a wide variety of indications such as abnormal screening and testing results, abnormal ultrasounds, family history concerns, recurrent pregnancy loss, etc. This includes:
• Analyzing genetic information to identify patients or families at risk for specific disorders or syndromes.
• Assessing patients' psychological or emotional needs such as those relating to stress, fear of test results, financial issues, and marital conflicts to make referral recommendations or assist patients in managing test outcomes.
• Determining or coordinating treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing genetics or counseling literature, and considering histories or diagnostic data.
• Discussing testing options and the associated risks, benefits and limitations with patients and families to assist them in making informed decisions.
• Facilitating decision-making and provide informed consent for prenatal screening and invasive genetic testing including chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis; Interpreting laboratory results and communicate findings to patients or physicians.
• Calling out and coordinates follow-up for patients with abnormal screening results in the Obstetrics department.
• Collaborating with postnatal Genetics team for continuation of patient care after delivery.
• Communicating and collaborating with other genetic counselors, maternal-fetal-medicine physicians, obstetricians, teratogen information specialists, referring providers and other multidisciplinary healthcare professionals, laboratories, and insurance companies.
• Serving as a resource for genetic information for referring physicians, ARNPs, PAs and midwives.
• Maintaining, inputs, and queries data from the quality control database.
Assist in development of clinic processes and protocols and the identification and reporting of barriers to program effectiveness and works with clinical staff to provide solutions.
Advises and assists schedulers in triaging referrals, review and approval of intakes, communication with referring provider offices regarding results.
Provides teratogen counseling as a Teratogen Information Specialist (TIS) as part of the USF Exposures Clinic and MotherToBaby Florida service both in clinic and via telephone, email, and chat.
Assists with supervision and training genetic counseling students, interns, residents, fellows, and volunteers (minimum 5 students per year).
Participates in education and outreach via the provision of lectures to various student groups, other medical providers, and lay groups.
Develops educational materials regarding genetic disease for health professionals and the lay public.
Attends continuing education classes, in-services, grand rounds, annual genetics, and teratology meetings and routinely reviews medical literature.
Perform academic and operational duties related to Teratogen Information Systems. These responsibilities include preparing patient friendly disease and medication education fact sheets, writing press releases, and blogs for the USF/TGH TIS center. Promotes genetic counseling and exposure counseling services among referring providers and community health providers and organizations.
Assists in coordinating bi-yearly Human Teratogen Course.
Contribute to research projects that are related to the job function including preparing scientific reviews and updates, collecting data for analysis, and scientific publication.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
• Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC)
• Six (6) months of clinical genetic counseling experience.
• Six (6) months of required clinical genetic counseling experience must include (Employer will accept experience and skills gained during employment, or during university education/courses): Teratogen counseling experience with teratology training; Experience with the concepts of prenatal genetics, clinical applications and standards necessary to provide comprehensive, current genetic services and counseling; Experience with risk assessment; Experience translating complex medical and genetic information to patients and health professionals; Case management; Experience with various teratogen information databases such as: Reprotox, TERIS, LactMed, or other; Experience designing, supervising and executing research protocols and familiarity with input and date retrieval on computer database; and Experience with ‘Mother to Baby.’
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
• Board certified or eligible as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC.)
