ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The USF Health Heart Institute will conduct basic, translational, and clinical research and provide patient care related to cardiovascular diseases. At its core, the Institute's research activities will address the root causes of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, congenital heart disease, cardiac arrythmias, peripheral vascular disease, and renal metabolic and pulmonary disease as they relate to the heart. The Institute will translate knowledge gained across these domains into novel therapeutics and diagnostics to improve the treatment and quality of life.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Primary duties will include lipidomics, and lipidomic analyses of various sample (serum, plasma, tissue) with main emphasis on cardiovascular pathobiology. This Scientific Researcher candidate will assist in development of methodology, prepare protocol for extraction and quantitation of bioactive lipids molecules using systems-biology "omics" methodologies, in particular Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) approaches. The Scientific Researcher will engage in mass spectrometry research and help the development of the next generation of experimental and informatics for deeper and more comprehensive integrated inflammation and resolution research, in particular for small molecule identification, measurements, and quantitation with specific interest to cardiovascular sciences.
This position exist exclusively for supporting mass spectrometry.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Analytical experience in mass spectrometry, HPLC and data analyses of mass spectrometry.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lab experiments and management of supplies (orders, instrument calibration, maintenance as necessary)
Apply HPLC methodology to biological samples and data analyses, report preparation for manuscript and patents.
Develop, revise, update, standard operating procedures (SOP) for research protocols and validate as necessary for research application.
Literature search, patent review, patent drafting, coordinate with collaborators and team members.
Harvest biological samples for various projects and bioanalyses of samples for targeted and untargeted lipidomics.
Develop protocols for mass spectrometry, microscopy, RT-PCR, in-vitro assay, and histology.
Conduct research on high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) measurements (Sciex6500-MS instrumentation) and computational data-mining/statistical analyses/biological information network generation.
Optimize extraction methodology, protocols, and perform mass spectrometry omics measurements on a variety of samples for the inflammation-resolution biology in heart failure.
Assist/train TEAM members and collaborator in experimental design for various bioactive lipid measurements utilizing a high-performance LC-MS/MS platform.
Independently design and test new approaches for improved extraction and quantitation for more comprehensive measurements.
Engage in interdisciplinary research using heart physiology and heart failure pathology for solving biological problems, in particular for cardiovascular sciences.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Master's degree in a natural science related to the specific area of research and two years of research experience. There is no substitution of experience allowed for the Master's degree, as that is a mandatory qualification for positions assigned to this job class.
PREFERRED:
Education in analytical chemistry and experience in HPLC and mass spectrometry is preferred. 3-5 years of experience or PhD with 1 year of experience.
