ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida is a comprehensive graduate research program whose excellent faculty and outstanding graduate students, at both the MS and PhD levels, interact together to solve complex scientific problems in all oceanographic environments. The College is a strong interdisciplinary group that transcends the traditional oceanographic fields using the latest technologies much of which is developed within its own program. The primary mission of the College is to conduct basic and applied research in ocean science. The College has 29 full time ranked faculty, with support from research associates and assistants, professional administrative staff, support staff and technical staff, approximately 100 Graduate Students, and approximately $15 million per year in research funding.  Partners include: United States Geological Survey, NOAA, Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, Florida Institute of Oceanography, and other USF colleges and departments.
Notable Centers: Center for Ocean Technology, Institute for Marine Remote Sensing, Florida Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence, Global Change Research Center.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for maintaining and implementing various laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintaining laboratory and safety equipment, including acid cleaning sample bottles and labware within a Class 100 clean environment.
Training new students and lab personnel on operating procedures.
Keeping records of lab personnel safety training.
Keeping records of inventory and completing purchase orders, when needed.
Processing samples using Seal Quaatro for inorganic nutrients, and seaFAST for trace metals.
Assisting with planning and the implementation of outreach efforts.
Field-based collection of samples for trace elements and nutrients on regional surveys, involves working on a ship for 7-9 days at a time, every 2-3 months.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and three years of laboratory or research experience. College coursework in a natural or physical science may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis.
PREFERRED:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, or in another science field and one year of postgraduate laboratory management or field-based research in trace metal chemistry/chemical oceanography.
