Description
JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the President and General Manager, the employee is directly responsible for all oil and gas well drilling, completion and workover operations as well as the construction of new rig builds & rig modifications, as well as all field operations. As “second in command” for the company, the Operations Manager oversees all field supervisors including Field Superintendents, Toolpushers, Tourpushers and Casing Supervisors. The Operations Manager also supervises the Electrical Administrator, the Engineering, Procurement, and Maintenance departments. The Operations Manager interfaces directly with the customer to determine requirements, constraints, limitations and other operating parameters that affect DDI’s work. Ensures that all standard operating procedures, guidelines, operating policies, applicable API standards and legal requirements are met. Examines and analyzes key drill rig data to make decisions about rig operations and procedures. Coordinates with all other DDI departments to ensure smooth operations in the Anchorage office and on all DDI drill rigs. The successful incumbent in this position will be required to interpret, follow and negotiate contracts with DDI’s customers. The position requires strong field experience, understanding of rig operations and excellent customer relationships.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Operations
o Works directly with customers to ensure operating requirements, applicable guidelines, standards, contractual, and legal requirements are met to their satisfaction
o Interact, communicate and meet regularly with customers, DDI leadership and support personnel on overall rig operations
o Responsible for meeting reporting requirements and procedures including rig reports, operations, analytics, operating hours and equipment logs
o Ensures that all required notices, permits, alerts and placards are posted.
o Ensures that employees are competent to perform jobs assigned, including emergency operations
o Ensures that rig activities are performed in a safe and efficient manner
o Ensures that the rig fleet is operated properly and well maintained. This includes emergency maintenance, preventative / planned maintenance, and capital improvement budgets and projects.
o Oversee the casing department
o Coordinate with other DDI departments including Procurement, Human Resources, HSE & Accounting
o Assist in appraisal and evaluation of rigs
o Manage projects of varying size including rig builds, management of change process, rig modifications, scheduling, etc.
• HSE
o Work closely with the Director of Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality to ensure regulatory compliance of rig operations
o Ensure required activity permits are communicated and completed properly
o Ensure safety, spill prevention and pre-job meetings are performed as required
o Participate in HSE-related investigations and audits
o Assist in setting annual HSE goals and targets
o Assist in root cause analysis of incidents and equipment failures including applicable reporting
o Promote DDI safety and hazard recognition programs
• Administration
o Document drilling activities and operations as required
o Assist in the insurance policy renewal process
o Assist in determination of staffing for leadership positions on rig
o Assist in scheduling rig maintenance
o Assist in completing annual budgets, capital expenditures requests, and forecasting
o Work with Human Resources on employee relations issues
o Supports DDI’s Doyon shareholder hire targets, training, and opportunities for Doyon shareholder employment
o Assist in preparing presentations and monthly reports for Doyon Limited, Senior Management and Board of Directors
o Act as authorized signor for payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable
o Requires regular travel to the North Slope of Alaska
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a first and second-line supervisor, this position is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the rig fleet. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Doyon Drilling Inc. policies and applicable laws including training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

• Ability to understand DDI’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Policy
• Knowledge of Environmental Management System (EMS) operation, key personnel, their functions, and responsibilities
• The Operations Manager must be able to read and interpret complex documents, tables, databases and must be able to perform critical analysis on the information provided
• Must be able to write reports and other operations-associated correspondence
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Petroleum engineering degree or an equivalent combination of training/experience in drilling and workover operations in the oil/gas industry
• Minimum of 4 years supervisory/management in the oil/gas industry
• Experience in managing large projects
• Valid Driver’s License
• Verification of COVID-19 vaccination
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• North Slope experience
• Alaska resident
• MMS approved Certificate of Completion in Well Control (surface, supervisor)
WORKING CONDITIONS
The work is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending and carrying items weighing less than forty pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both in an office environment and at remote drill rig locations. At the remote locations, employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and extreme heat. The noise level in the remote work environment is usually loud. At remote locations, employee will work in an environment where there is risk that they will be exposed to toxic, caustic and/or hazardous chemicals, fumes or airborne particles.
