The Engineering Excellence Subject Matter Expert (SME) is a new role in the Engineering Excellence Practice within the EMPC service line. The SME needs to be comfortable with all aspects of engineering delivery including effectively integrating Engineering with Product, defining Architecture engagement and outcomes, leading lean and agile Development and Testing practices, and accelerating paths to production.
The Engineering Excellence SME will assess, evaluate and analyze a client’s current engineering delivery practices and develop and manage an engineering transformation roadmap promoting industry-leading digital practices. This role is the senior-most SME in the Engineering Excellence practice and as such is expected to independently drive relationships with clients, set strategies, manage transformations, and mentor junior engineers. The ability to work independently with little guidance or documented support and assist in the creation of reusable content to grow future team members is critical to the success of the right applicant and of the practice.
You’ll spend time on the following:
• Assess, evaluate, and analyze current delivery practices and operating models
• Develop comprehensive, prioritized transformation roadmaps incorporating organizational change management principles
• Maintain a balanced (both deep and wide) understanding of end-to-end industry leading engineering practices
• Create customer value focused, outcome driven goals and measures of success
• Identify and map delivery value stream(s)
• Establish value stream management capabilities to identify waste
• Remove obstacles to delivery flow
• Recommend enhancements to testing strategies, practices, and operating models
• Establish delivery team performance, health, and value-creation observability and reporting mechanisms
• Direct organizational and operation changes to drive improvements in key delivery metrics
• Develop long-standing, self-managed,cross-functional, autonomous delivery teams
• Create highly engaged and driven engineering team members
• Ensure engineering demands (technical runway and technical debt) are effectively prioritized
• Apply agile principles of experimentation and failing fast to transformation execution
• Track and communicate/celebrate incremental progress
• Create and foster a growth mindset culture
• Coach client executives in order get the greatest engagement and performance from their teams
• Rightsize portfolio work in progress (WIP) to maximize flow
• Help clients establish a team-centered, pull-based work culture
• Establish and protect space for enablement and growth within the delivery team
• Ensure cross-functional teams have the necessary skills and domain expertise
• Identify strategic opportunities for automation
• Contribute to the creation of reusable materials and starter kits
• Mentor and grow future SMEs
Here’s what we are looking for:
• 10-15 years of progressive leadership in a software delivery capacity (product. UX, architecture, development, engineering, testing, operations, etc.)
• 10+ years of hands on experience with a range of agile methods (Scrum, XP, Kanban, SAFE, LeSS,etc.) within multiple environments/organizations.
• 5+ years of direct consulting experience
• 5+ years of program management experience
• 5+ years of developing strategic roadmaps
• 5+ years of experience developing organizational goals and corresponding KPI’s
• 5+ years of agile coaching experience
• 5+ years of organizational change management experience
• Strong executive presence
• Ability to convey complex strategies and concepts in clear terms
• Ability to inspire and motivate teams and leaders at all levels
• Independently driven and able to establish direction with little guidance
• Comfortable creating order out of ambiguity
Other things to know
While we’ve traditionally been a traveling consultancy, travel is not required for this role at the moment. We anticipate the need for travel to our client locations in the future when it’s deemed safe.
