About Our Job
Performs manual, semi-skilled work assisting an engineering survey party in land surveying activities in the field. Assists in the surveying of drainage, locates and establishes permanent survey monumentation of land and water boundaries, sets and resets survey control points, establishes benchmark elevations, locates easements, and reads drainage/topographic maps and construction plans. Work involves responsibility for operating technical surveying instruments as required to perform land surveys in the field with speed and accuracy. Involves performing routine office work.
Job Description:
Sets up, adjusts and operates a survey total station to collect and GPS equipment collecting and coordinate data of boundary lines monuments, control and topographic features. Reads elevations, angles and distances and inputs data into survey Nomad Data Collector. Opens sanitary manholes, measures sanitary pipe inverts inside box using a steel tape measure, assess box and pipe condition, GPS center manhole, logs all data and elevations using a Tablet with the GIS Collector Application.
Sets up and maintains traffic control warning signs and cones compliant with FDOT MOT standards.
Locates and digs for survey monuments and benchmarks; sets and locates monumentation markers; sets and establishes benchmark elevations; sets permanent benchmarks, section corners and property corners in concrete or by other means. Locates underground utilities.
May act as survey party chief for short intermittent periods, directing other crewmembers in job tasks.
Performs a variety of office tasks including preparation of project packages for field crews, preliminary review of survey calculations, release of technical data to the public, downloading electronic files, converting files, maintaining GIS survey projects layer, plotting maps, and logging hours in Maximo daily.
Maintains clear and concise field notes showing lines, angles, distances, chords, traverses, elevations, and quantities; checks plat books; performs computations. May prepare preliminary or additional survey explanatory sketches as a guide for draftsmen and engineering designers.
Prepares vehicle for work; loads and off-loads materials, supplies, or equipment. Ensures batteries are charged, supplies are ordered, and equipment is calibrated and cleaned.
Operates surveying instruments, GPS equipment, total station, Tablet with GIS applications, level, digital level, survey rod; hand-held data collector, laptop and County vehicle as required.
Clears brush and other obstructions using chainsaw, machete, axe and shovel.
About You
Minimum Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or equivalent
Certified Survey Technician Level I
Two (2) years of relevant progressive experience in land surveying; or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications: Coursework in mathematics and drafting preferred.
Work Hours: 6:00 a.m. – 2: 30 p.m. Monday – Friday
Job Competencies:
Knowledge of general construction principles and practices.
Knowledge of the techniques and practices of land surveying.
Knowledge of the use and adjustment of surveying instruments, GPS equipment, hand-held data collectors, and other equipment used in tasks as required by the job.
Knowledge of land survey nomenclature and symbols.
Skill in the use and care of engineering survey instruments and tools.
Ability to perform precise survey work, read instruments and gauges, make engineering computations, and reduce field notes.
Ability to perform bathymetric and global positioning surveys.
Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
Ability to maintain files and records in an orderly manner; ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives.
Good written and oral communication skills; ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to perform manual labor, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Physical Demands: Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
