Girl Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains to Midlands council is the largest organization serving girls in South Carolina. The council has a current membership of close to 6,000 girls, more than 2,500 volunteers and a staff of 40 (plus an additional 30+ seasonally). POSITION SUMMARY
The Kitchen Aide is responsible for assisting the Kitchen Manager and Kitchen Assistant in the preparation and delivery of enjoyable, nutritious meals for campers and staff and maintaining a clean and safe kitchen and dining environment. This includes preparing food for meals and special event. Food preparation may include washing, peeling, and cutting vegetables, preparing poultry and meats, preparing breads, making dressings and sauces, and other tasks as assigned by the Kitchen Manager. Kitchen maintenance duties include cleaning utensils and work areas, running the industrial dishwasher, mopping floors, etc. The incumbent must maintain health and safety standards in the kitchen and dining hall in accordance with Girl Scout standards, the American Camp Association (ACA), and DHEC regulations.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
• Must be at least 18 years old. High school diploma preferred.
• ServSafe certification or equivalent certification preferred.
• Experience in standards of food preparation, serving, and kitchen procedures, preferably in a camp or institutional setting.
• Ability to accept supervision and follow directions.
• Ability to work Sunday dinner through Friday lunch every week throughout the summer and on occasional weekends.
• Good communication skills with ability to interact professionally with staff, campers, and parents.
• Experienced in applying key competencies to include strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to make independent decisions; interact effectively with staff and volunteers; and work well with children.
• Individuals who are Bilingual (Spanish) are encouraged to apply.
• Upon hire, must hold personal membership in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
• Ability to drive preferred but not required. Drivers must possess a valid driver’s license, maintain personal auto insurance/meet the council insurance company’s requirement for coverage, and submit to drug test and background check.
. Requirements:
• Assist in all areas of the Food Service department including duties in basic food preparation, salad bar preparation, dishwashing, extensive cleaning, assisting in “packing out” for trip and cookout experiences, managing stock, serving on a buffet line, and ensuring the highest quality food service experience.
• Participate in the daily opening, operating, and closing of the kitchen, as assigned by Kitchen Manager.
• Participate with staff and other kitchen personnel in food preparation and clean-up.
• Assist with inventory and unloading/organizing of product when delivered.
• Maintain the cleanliness of dining area and restrooms – including, but not limited to: sweeping, mopping, sanitizing of surfaces, etc.
• On-site lodging available upon request. Lodging specifics provided separately. Applicants choosing to live off site must have own transportation.
• Loads, operates and unloads dishwashing machines and hand washes food preparation and serving equipment, utensils, pots, pans, etc. Delivers and stores clean dishes and utensils to proper storage area.
• Cleans kitchen area, tables, cabinets, equipment, etc. Disposes of trash and garbage;
• Assists in loading food trays on carts or trucks for delivery.
• Performs related kitchen duties as required and assigned.
ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Activities occur both inside (un-air-conditioned kitchen environment) and outside with employee subject to both environmental conditions to include fluctuating weather conditions (hot, cold, windy, etc.) as well as outdoor exposure to variety of vegetation.
• Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, work with fingers, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions; and physical dexterity to operate kitchen utensils and equipment.
• Ability to perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
• Maintain good personal hygiene and wear the appropriate protective clothing to work in a kitchen, including long pants, closed toed shoes, and hair coverings.
COMPENSATION/BENEFITS
Summer seasonal employment is a unique experience and falls under the seasonal exemption standard categorized as “seasonal amusement or recreational establishment” by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Department of Labor (DOL). T his exempts the position from federal minimum and overtime wage requirements as we compensate a daily rate plus lodging and meals providing in addition to seasonal earnings during scheduled workdays. The potential weekly earnings for this position may be up to $300 depending on availability, scheduling, experience, and any related certifications. This is a seasonal position only with no eligibility for benefits.
