Description
The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates 13 correctional facilities that house Kentucky's adult inmate population. The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth and to provide a safe, secure and humane environment for staff and offenders in carrying out the mandates of the legislative and judicial processes; and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquire skills which facilitate non-criminal behavior.
The Corrections Vocational Instructor at Western Kentucky Correctional Complex provides classroom and performance based instruction in carpentry to eligible offenders. This position requires experience in preparing lesson plans and the ability to apply supporting carpentry curriculum. Carpentry experience is preferred with knowledge of tools and materials typical to the field.
The individual filling this position will be required to instruct and assist offenders in various woodworking projects while remaining mindful of institutional security measures. The position requires some basic computer and record-keeping skills.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Applies a carpentry curriculum and instructs offenders in the classroom and in hands-on carpentry applications.
• Plans and schedules projects to include the ordering of necessary materials for various woodworking projects.
• Maintains an institutional shop area, tool and equipment inventories, and chemical logs.
• Records offender attendance and student information, schedules projects, and maintains other school- related documentation.
• Attends meetings, prepares reports, and attends trainings as required to best meet the needs of the institution.
Additional responsibilities include record keeping, scheduling / time reporting, ordering of supplies / equipment, report preparations, and performing other institutional duties as required.
The ideal candidate for this position will have effective communication skills and the ability / desire to teach others. Experience in carpentry or woodworking is preferred.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three (3) years of trade-related experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education will substitute for up to two (2) years of the trade-related experience.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a classroom / shop setting within a correctional institution.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
