Full Job Description Lower School Teacher, Full Time
Job Summary:
Working with the head of school and department head for lower school, the ideal lead teacher for lower school will help develop and guide the academic and social- emotional growth of children in their class. Currently we are looking for a teacher that can run a second or fourth grade classroom. This may change to another grade between first and sixth.
For over sixty years, our PK-12 school has been an educational beacon in north
Texas. The environment here is student-focused and individualized. Our mission is to develop students that are capable, empathetic, problem-solving, creative, capable of critical thought and effective communication and able to find and pursue their own paths as global citizens.
Your contributions will be instrumental to continuing this mission.
Our lower school builds off of the Reggio Emilia foundation established in pre- school and kindergarten.
Responsibilities will include:
• Contributing to the curriculum and guidance of your grade and class.
• Teaching and managing your class and other school-related activities as needed, adopting the pedagogy and philosophies of education promoted by our school’s academic leadership.
• Partnering with other teachers and staff regularly, helping to vertically align curriculum across grades.
• Understanding and executing school health and safety protocols in place to protect students, families and staff.
• Communicating regularly and effectively with parents, peers and leadership on school and student issues, progress, challenges, successes.
• Evaluating student performance, social development, behavior, health and intellectual growth, reporting on these as required through school-defined systems and processes (e.g. RenWeb). Planning and conducting parent- teacher conferences during designated periods and as needed.
• Establishing clear objectives for students appropriate for your grade level and providing the tools and lessons to attain them.
• Attend all mandatory faculty meetings and other school and community events, monitoring our published calendar.
• Knowledge of student and faculty handbooks and other school rules, and enforcement within school guidelines.
• Having a clear understanding of our school mission and values, and using these as the foundation for all planning, education and activity.
• Other responsibilities and activities as directed by the Head of School and
Lower School Department Head.
General Education and Experience:
The ideal candidate will:
• Hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in elementary education or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university. Advanced degree(s) are a plus, as is training and experience in the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy.
• Have at least 3 years successful classroom experience, ideally in an independent school. Certification in said area(s) or active pursuit of certification is a plus but not required.
• Be capable of designing and teaching lessons for Lower School students (1-
6).
• Have the ability to tailor an innovative, engaging educational approach to the particular needs of a class or student, delivering an education that effectively motivates every student to their potential and reflects our school’s mission and pedagogy.
• When needed, help develop a class / program budget and manage expenses within this budget.
• On and off campus, represent our school in a way that positively builds our brand image and motivates people to learn more about the school.
• In the spirit of independent schools, give of your time to help develop and execute school events and programs as needed.
• Comply with all applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations regarding teaching lower school children.
• Have unimpeachable ethics, honesty, respect for all and a deep desire to work on behalf of students and the people who serve them.
• Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as required by school leadership.
Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Leveraging a modern understanding of effective education, develop and teach a variety of lessons to Lower School students and deliver these lessons both indoors and outdoors.
• Partner with other teachers and staff and working effectively with department heads, the head of school and school leadership.
• Serve as a leader and role model, exhibiting the character, understanding, demeanor, resilience and leadership expected of all professionals at our school.
• Day and overnight travel as required for school field trips.
• Work on an Apple-centric IT platform and learn various online applications and systems.
• Comply with all staff, state and school requirements, including the Faculty and Staff Handbook. Represent Selwyn School well, on and off campus, exhibiting professionalism, ethical behavior and respect. Maintain all records as required by the school and governmental licensing bureaus. Be on campus on the schedule required by the Head.
• Proactively engage in self-development each year to improve effectiveness, working with department head to schedule teacher development.
• Other duties as assigned.
Other Qualifications:
All prospective employees must be able to clear a background check and other employee screening as required. A USA-valid and current drivers license and record in good standing is required.

Salary will be negotiated with eligible candidates. Selwyn School offers health and dental benefits and school holidays.
