Introduction
This is semi-skilled and heavy manual work involving operation of a sanitation truck and supervision of its crew. Bargaining unit position.
Nature Of Work
An employee in this class is responsible for supervising a crew and driving a sanitation truck to collect refuse on an assigned route and shift, at times during inclement weather. Under general supervision, employee receives instructions orally and in writing and performs tasks, which are of average difficulty requiring exercise of some initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and results obtained.
Examples of Duties
Drives a sanitation truck and has responsibility for proper operation, cleaning, and minor maintenance of the vehicle; supervises activities of an assistant driver and/or collectors assigned to the truck.
Collects and hauls refuse from residential areas to the municipal incinerator or landfill.
Fuels truck, checks tires, battery, oil, water, and hydraulic fluid; reports any major deficiencies for immediate attention; washes or deodorizes trucks and containers when necessary; keeps records and makes oral and written reports as instructed.
Trains and instructs new collectors and drivers in correct procedures such as proper hand signals, work methods, and safety precautions.
Operates vehicle radio utilizing standard procedures.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of : operation and maintenance characteristics of a residential rearor side- loader truck and equipment; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
Ability to : read, understand, and follow simple and specific oral and written instructions; perform semi-skilled manual tasks and, when required, operate complicated mechanisms requiring considerable coordination; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance, at times during inclement weather; interpret route maps; operate vehicle radio; supervise and assign work, as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with other.
Skill and ability to : operate a residential truck and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and one (1) year in manual laborer experience with six (6) months of experience driving heavy-duty trucks and equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license, Class "B” with Air Brakes.
Comments
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
