Overview
Help Duties Summary
This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the James A. Haley VA Hospital (JAHVAH) in Tampa, Florida, and adjacent clinics.
The Medical Supply Technician assists in sterilizing, decontamination, and transportation of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).
Please note: This is not a Supply/Purchasing/Logistics Position .

Responsibilities
The Medical Supply Technician duties include, but are not limited to:
• Receiving contaminated critical, semi-critical, and noncritical reusable medical equipment (RME) in the decontamination area.
• Disassembling RME and determining the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers, and chemical cleaning or decontamination agents as determined by manufactures instructions.
• Inspects, prepares, assembles, and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization (including steam, V-PRO, and high-level disinfecting reprocessors.
• Prepares operating room case carts for daily utilization surgery schedules.
• Removes blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, and scrubbing.
• Will inspect packages for indications and utilization of proper sterilization.
• Assembles complex sets and trays for use throughout the medical center, including the operating rooms.
• Performs segments of work that pertain to the decontamination, sterilization, and inspection of RME.
• Completes segments of work that pertain to the assembly of complex sets and trays for use in the medical center.
• Will operate equipment and apparatus for use in the sterilization processes.
• Conducts and documents daily operational checks and records all sterilization equipment.
• Follows guidance from SPS management and experienced staff members.
Work Schedule: Operations are 24/7. Various tours available with rotating weekends and holidays

Qualifications
Basic Requirements :
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Experience and/or Education:
(1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
(2) Education. One year above high school that included at least six (6) semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
(3) Experience/Education Combination. An equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
*Foreign Education. Education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization specializing in interpreting foreign educational credentials to be creditable. Such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs.
Grade Determinations :
For GS-5 grade:
• (a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level; or
• (b) Education. Four academic years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation or a bachelor's degree.
In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
• Basic knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
• Basic knowledge of event-related packaging in regard to sterility.
• Knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
For GS-06 grade:
• (a) Experience. One year of experience is equivalent to the next lower grade level.
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
• Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
• Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross-contamination.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions, and procedures.
• Knowledge of sterility principles regarding instrumentation.
• The ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.
Selective Placement Factors: REQUIRED knowledge for this position includes the following:
• Basic knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinical settings.
• Basic knowledge of event-related packaging regarding sterility, knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment
• Knowledgeable of sterility principles regarding instrumentation.
• Knowledgeable of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinical settings
Preferred Experience:
• Functional knowledge of assembly of surgical instruments, endoscope reprocessing, and different methods of sterilization.
• Knowledge of best practices in the field of Central Sterile Processing, IAHCSMM, AAMI, CDC, and VHA Directives.
• Knowledge of bacteriology and infection prevention, methods, and principles of the sterilization process.
• Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, medical terms, and surgical procedures.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. Selection for this vacancy will only be made at the GS-5/GS-6 level.
Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a health care setting, with exposure to: inside and outside work, excessive heat, excessive humidity, excessive noise, intermittent and constant, use of solvents, walking or standing on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around machinery with moving parts, working around moving objects or vehicles, unusual fatigue factors (repetitive motions), working with hands in water, working closely with others, working alone, and working protracted or irregular hours. Routinely requires heavy lifting (45 lbs. and over), heavy carrying (45 lbs. and above), straight pulling and pushing (up to 8 hrs.), walking (8 hrs.), standing (8 hrs.), kneeling (8 hrs.), repeated bending (8 hrs.), both legs required, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing aid permitted, and ability to operate transportation equipment.
