What you’ll be doing...
This role will lead the AHSOC hazard response GIS application roadmap. This is a highly technical role that will be responsible for the management of a GIS ecosystem of database servers, web servers, application servers. This will be a multiyear tech stack evolution supporting the build out of Verizon's AHSOC. The GIS Engineer will work closely with customers and stakeholders to create and define user stories, use cases, and identify pain points associated with existing manual processes and future-state automation. Once requirements are identified the engineer will work independently to recommend both hardware and software solutions, ultimately responsible for the delivery of identified solution. The role will be responsible for prioritizing and delivering on requirements for each of the stakeholders as they relate to Verizon's ability to assess, mitigate, and respond to external hazards to our people, network, operations, and customers. The Geographic Information System (GIS) application engineer is part of the Verizon Corporate Security Organization (CSO) protecting Verizon against hazards that impact Verizon resources or its customers.
The role will be tasked to develop customized Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) JavaScript and Python Application Programming Interface (API) web applications, web services, mobile, and enterprise solutions. The role will provide architectural expertise to develop geoprocessing and geographical information system (GIS) web services. This work allows various datasets to be visualized and summarized on maps in near real time. Examples are heat maps of employee counts by zip code, retail stores, cell towers and network nodes within the impact zone of a hurricane cone, wildfire perimeter, tsunami evacuation and civil unrest events. This will allow emergency managers at all levels within the enterprise to focus on the risk and impact to Verizon’s operations and make decisions to prioritize risk preparedness, response, and mitigation activities.
The role is tasked with integrating disparate data streams by developing and configuring location-based dashboards and risk assessment apps on the ESRI ArcGIS platform. This requires the role to continuously learn about and understand our internal customer pain points, user stories and requirements. Then the role must design and configure data stores within the ESRI supporting databases. Finally, the role will use developer/integrator skillsets to connect data and configure apps from templates/product sets within the ESRI tech stack.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
• System architecture and design: Recommends, sources and implements hardware, middleware, software, and database components for the purpose of developing and maintaining enterprise level common operating picture dashboards and situational analysis tools.
• System Administration: Analyzes and resolves problems associated with servers, hardware and software. Installing, configuring and maintaining operating hardware and software. Troubleshooting server and operating system problems
• Project management: Interfaces with technical peers and stakeholders integrate, test and connect data streams. Recommends, facilitates and monitors test methods and procedures
• Coding and script development: Uses experience and education with data integration though writing APIs (SOAP and/or preferably REST) using one of more of the following languages: Python, Java, JSON Node, Ruby, PHP, C# or SDKs to integrate disparate data sources with the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) technology stack. Configures, writes and tunes database elements using a variety of database tools.
• Data: The employee will independently seek peer teams and internal customers who have responsibility for data management and will partner to develop, connect and curate data sources to meet the needs of business. For example: integration and statistical/geographical data representation of near real-time Verizon Location Manager (VLM) retail store status changes caused by crisis/disaster with the ERSI common operating picture dashboard platform. This will give Senior Leaders access to visualized data to make operational decisions such as priority of health and safety of employees, priority of service delivery issues.
This position can be located in any of our domestic Security locations.
This hybrid role will have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days as set by the manager.
