POSITION SUMMARY:
The Systems Administrator II is responsible for the installation, configuration and system administration of Microsoft SQL Server database servers and other related Microsoft products such as Analysis Services, Reporting Services and Integration Services.  This position is responsible also for assisting with the administration of MariaDB instances as well. This position will assist users with troubleshooting connectivity and other issues related to the servers managed by the IT App/Web Services SQL Server Ops team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Customer Support - Provides assistance to faculty, staff, and students on the use of MS SQL Server and MariaDB software as needed for departmental database operations through monitoring and responding to incidents logged in the Service Now help-desk system. Works with customers in the system integration and development of bulk data import/export procedures. Develops and implements various training, job aids, and instruction for users on the use of database management systems and supported applications and operating systems.
• Database Security - Creates SQL Server logins, SQL accounts and assign security privileges as requested/approved for end users. Follows existing security procedures, to include firewall, host and client access in addition to file permissions. Follows established account and server maintenance procedures to ensure effective security and quality data integrity.
• Database Backup and Disaster Recovery - Follows established backup policies and procedures to ensure data / media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations. Recommends changes to backup policies and procedures. Guarantees the ability of the databases to restart after a technology failure by following testing procedures for backups and performing regular backup restore tests. Monitors and analyzes logs and alerts to verify the continued success of database backups.
• Systems Analysis and Monitoring - SQL Server and MariaDB database and server administration of multiple databases.  Collaborates and consults with departmental developers and application managers and end-users on projects which require SQL database support. This position works in a supporting role to assist departmental users/customers during design and implementation of database solutions. Monitors and tunes systems to achieve optimum performance levels in addition to managing data storage. Develops and maintains documentation of database and operating system hardware/software configuration in established database application. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
• Installation and Maintenance - Installs, configures, and maintains multiple MS-SQL database servers primarily MS-SQL Server, ensuring proper integration with other university computer systems, applications and database management systems. Performs software installations and upgrades to these systems and the dependent software applications.
• MySQL Database Support Installation Maintenance, Security Backup and recovery, monitoring and customer support.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training and two years of IT related work experience; or a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and three years of IT related work experience, OR a Master's degree and one year of IT related work experience, OR a combination of six years of IT related work experience and validated training.  Preparation for a relevant IT certification is considered to be related training.
