ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The mission of the University of South Florida (USF) Institute of Applied Engineering (IAE) is to provide agile, best value engineering products and services to enhance the performance, effectiveness and safety of its customers. The Institute's customers include the Department of Defense, other federal, state and local agencies, and industry. In support of its mission, the Institute performs applied research in alignment with the following core competencies: Autonomous Systems; Human Performance Enhancement; Data Analytics; Cyber and Electromagnetic Domain Security; and Transportation and Energy infrastructure. As a Direct Support Organization (DSO) of USF, the IA is a separately incorporated Florida 501(c)(3) authorized to use USF property, facilities, and personal services for the benefit of USF's research, development, and education mission.
POSITION SUMMARY:
IAE Engineer Scientist I collaborates with staff on development, design, fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery of projects related to research and technology development. The Engineer Scientist I position directly participates in research project design and analysis and new business development. The Engineer Scientist I may also lead a team including full-time staff, undergraduate, and graduate students through assigned project tasks while providing guidance and mentorship to the team and providing progress and status reports to project leadership. The Engineer Scientist I supports administrative tasks related to managing project performance and deliverables.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position funded by a Department of Defense contract. Candidates must be US citizens and must be eligible for a U.S. security clearance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates on conceptual development, design, fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery of projects related to research and technology development.
Assists the Engineer Scientists II, III, and IV in leading a team of full-time staff, undergraduate and graduate students through assigned project tasks by providing guidance, mentorship, and resources to promote productive work.
Supports administrative tasks required for performance of research and technology development tasks, including management of contract deliverables, procurement of research materials and equipment, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Interfaces with stakeholders external to USF under guidance of project leadership, including reporting on projects and deliverables and supporting customer activities.
Acts as an advisor to stakeholders internal to USF, primarily other IAE staff and personnel, to help enact the IAE strategic plan and make optimal operational decisions related to delivering on projects and contracts.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physical or Biological Sciences.
PREFERRED:
A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechatronics,
Additional preferred qualifications include evidence of:
• Solid foundation in computer science, programming, and data structures with modern object-oriented languages
• Modifying, designing, and implementing kernel software for device drivers, interfaces, interrupt handlers, and other low-level platform-dependent software
• Troubleshooting operating systems and building kernel images
• Developing and maintaining hardware/software integration tools
• Troubleshooting networks, networking protocols (TCP/UDP), and distributed applications
• Technical design input for software, system, architecture, verification, and validation processes
• Familiarity with source control (Git) and team-based code development
SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING:
Experience using/with:
• C/C++
• Python
• Bash scripting
• Microcontrollers, e.g., Arduino, ATtiny
• Embedded computers, e.g., Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone
• Linux operating systems
• Building and installing software under Linux operating systems
• Cross-compiling software for embedded hardware devices
• Communications and networking between host and client devices, e.g., over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, serial, I2C, or other protocols
• Linux networking, including firewall ports/protocols management
• Internet of Things (IoT) devices and protocols, e.g., wireless sensors
• Software version control, e.g., Git
• Digital signal processing and software defined radios
