Department Profile:
The Laboratory Department delivers comprehensive clinical and anatomic pathology services with state of the art instrumentation complimented by professional expertise.  More than 3  million billable orders are processed annually.  Testing is fully accredited by the College of American Pathologist, COLA, and CLIA to achieve the highest standard of excellence.   The Laboratory is staffed with medical technologists, lab assistants, and phlebotomists. A certified Medical Technologist Program supplements future staffing.  A research-driven testing menu with quick result reporting allows the department to support clinical decisions in chemistry, immunochemistry, hematology, coagulation, anatomic pathology, cytology, microbiology, flow cytometry and molecular diagnostics for patients of all ages.   The department also supports point of care testing in the hospital and the offsite facilities.
Job Summary:
Works under the general direction of the Administrative Director and is responsible for the management and operation of an assigned laboratory section. Available to the laboratory as needed for telephone, electronic and on-site consultation. Ensures that the section conforms to the standards of CLIA 88, OSHA, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, the College of American Pathologists, and other local, state and federal agencies having jurisdiction over laboratories. Interviews, hires, schedules, evaluates and assess competency of team members. When necessary disciplines and recommends disciplinary action and discharge of staff. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital. Establishes or verifies laboratory test performance specifications and selection of test methodology. Ensures enrollment in proficiency testing. Establishes a quality control program to monitor ongoing test performance. Resolution of technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken as well as no patient results are reported until corrective actions are taken and test systems are functioning properly. Identifies training needs.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or related area and completion of training in an NACCLS-approved program, or equivalent education and experience. Must meet the qualifications for Technical Consultant and Technical Supervisor and/or General Supervisor for laboratories performing high complexity testing, as outlined in CLIA 88 regulations. Experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible work experience in a clinical laboratory. Must have Current Florida Medical Technologist Supervisor license and ASCP certification preferred.
