ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The University of South Florida Water Institute is a research center affiliated with the School of Geosciences at the University of South Florida. The Water Institute facilitates innovative multidisciplinary research, education and public outreach efforts that assist public and private sector agencies and organizations within the State of Florida, the nation and the world. The core staff of the Water Institute work as a 6-7 person team  of web, database and GIS developers (plus students) to create and manage several online data-driven web applications that provide comprehensive data resource that helps citizens and scientists alike make informed decisions concerning environmental resources (see Water Institute Websites at https://waterinstitute.usf.edu/ ). POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Database Developer will be responsible for assisting with the maintenance and loading of data for all Water Institute databases, including those relating to grant funded data management and internet application development projects. This position will join a team who develops and supports several publicly accessible data-driven websites, including: https://dev.seacar.waterinstitute.usf.edu , www.wateratlas.org , www.water-cat.org and www.plantatlas.org . This position will program Microsoft SQL Server databases using standard query language (TSQL), including stored procedures, ETL tools (BCP, SSIS, Powershell), data views, and other database objects. They will be responsible for all data requests and data load events based on project-specific schedules, and assume responsibility for accurate data transformation procedures based on guidelines provided by Project Managers and by external entities such as data providers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Designs and programs Microsoft SQL Server databases using standard query language (TSQL), including stored procedures, ETL tools (BCP, SSIS, Powershell), data views, and other database objects.
• Responsible for all data requests and data load events based on project-specific schedules.
• Assumes responsibility for accurate data transformation procedures based on guidelines provided by Project Managers and by external entities such as data providers.
• Conducts physical database design using data modeling techniques, including entity relationship diagramming, normalization, and key selection. Defines referential integrity constraints.
• Attends meetings where other teams? (i.e. web, GIS, content) issues are considered, and plays a role in influencing decisions made by non-technical functional area representatives.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and IT certification OR
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 1-year relevant work experience OR
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training
PREFERRED:
• Authorization to work in the US without a need for visa sponsorship to continue working in the United States.
• Experience with relational database development (specifically ETL), database modelling and design, testing, quality control-quality assurance, automation, optimization, and debugging. Classes, certifications, or work experience with Microsoft SQL Server and it's associated tools and technologies.
• Familiarity with web development is a plus (We use a C#.NET/ Javascript stack).
• Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ArcGIS) is a plus.
