CRANE OPERATOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Crane Operator
BUSINESS UNIT: Titan Contracting and Leasing Co, Inc.
EMPLOYEE TYPE: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Foreman
OVERVIEW
A crane operator operates the crane to lift, position and place machinery, equipment or other large objects at construction sites and industrial facilities.
WORK SCHEDULE
Varies by location. Must have open availability any time, any day of the week. Length of employment is limited to job assignment and/or project duration.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Safety – work safely around the hazards associated with the operating cranes.
• Tools – use hand, electric, pneumatic and hydraulic tools and in a safe manner.
• Construction Math - Demonstrates competency in construction math as required in trade practice.
• Basic Principles of Cranes – Identify the types of cranes, their components and boom attachments found on construction sites. Can describe the effects of leverage and factors that affect lifting capacities. Can define a critical lift.
• Operation – Performs site analysis, understands and completes pre-lift checklists and lift plans. Starts cranes engine and moves levers and pedals to rotate crane on chassis to raise and lower crane boom and to raise and lower load-line. Bolts boom sections together to extend or modify boom for pile driving or high lifting. Receives direction from signal person.
• Stability – Places blocks and outriggers to prevent capsizing when lifting heavy loads. Has an advanced knowledge of load dynamics.
• Rigging – Safely and competently identify and use advanced rigging procedures and equipment.
• Locates needed material or equipment to be moved by lift and secures those materials following safety guidelines.
• Selects cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks, sheaves, slings, chokers, and shackles according to weight and size of load to be moved.
• Able to understand weight limits of various chokers, shackles, pulleys, winches, blocks, sheaves and cables.
• Communication – Understands that communication is paramount for safe and effective operation of crane. Can identify the signal person on the jobsite and communicates effectively with management, crew and signal person. Understands and can describe the communicating dynamics involved in conducting multiple-crane lifts. Must be proficient in the use of hand signals
• Work within precise limits and standards of accuracy.
• Follow oral and written directions.
• Work within company policies (including Safety and Human Resources policies), client policy and OSHA safety requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor as needed.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Four (4) years field experience in trade.
• Able to identify all hand signals, weight limits, safety regulations and operating codes that are relevant for crane operation.
• Must have current driver’s license and other certification(s) as required by client, facility, OSHA, State or Federal regulations.
• Completion of pre-hire and post-hire substance abuse testing as required by company and/or client.
• Completion of Safety related certifications such as OSHA 10 or Safety council programs as required by company and/or client.
• Ability to work with others to achieve job goals.
• Read, write and communicate using English language sufficient to perform job functions as required by client and/or facility policy.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Stand or walk for long periods of time.
• Use arms and hands to reach for, handle or manipulate objects.
• Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally lifting items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance.
• Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds and other objects.
• Stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
• Acceptable eyesight – naturally or with correction.
• Eye-hand coordination.
• Good physical fitness.
• Good sense of balance.
• Work at great heights is required.
TOOL REQUIREMENTS (minimum)
• Rain Coat or Poncho
• Steel toed or Composite toed Work Boots
ENVIRONMENT
Construction workers perform physically demanding work including lifting and carrying heavy objects, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling in awkward positions. Some work at great heights, or outdoors in all weather conditions. Some jobs expose workers to harmful materials or chemicals, fumes, odors, loud noise or dangerous machinery. Some workers may be exposed to lead based paint, asbestos, or other hazardous substances during their work especially when working in confined spaces. To avoid injury, workers in these jobs wear safety clothing/personal protective equipment such as gloves, hard hats, protective chemical suits, and devices to protect their eyes, respiratory system and hearing. While working in underground construction, Construction workers must be especially alert to safely follow procedures and must deal with a variety of hazards.
