Nature Of Work
The employee in this class is responsible for Instructing participants in the technical fundamentals of gymnastics, dance, fitness and youth sports; including, but not limited to softball and basketball. at an assigned recreation area. Under general supervision, the employee performs assignments which include ordering and maintaining necessary equipment. Tasks, which are of average difficulty, require the exercise of some initiative and independent judgement in planning and promoting gymnastics activities including fitness, drills, and skills as it relates to youth sports. The majority of positions in this class require varying schedules including nights and weekends. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, and results obtained.
Examples of Duties
Creates lesson plans, promotes, organizes, and teaches gymnastics and/or dance classes; plans and promotes exhibitions; prepares participants for gymnastics meets and dance showcases; travels with gymnastics and/or dance teams. Promotes, plans, and conducts fitness classes and youth sports programs.
Develops training classes, curriculum and lesson plans; provides assistance to Instructors in the development of plans for classes and competition.
Organizes fund-raising projects; sets up gymnasium for all activities; orders, inspects and maintains gymnastics and youth sports equipment; administers first aid; collects dues and completes financial records; traces and collects delinquent fees; ensures adherence to proper safety measures.
Maintains accurate records of attendance, property damage, special activities, and accidents; attends and conducts sessions at meetings, workshops, and training clinics; coordinates programs and activities with coworkers and supervisor; promotes good public relations with community; answers phone and provides information regarding programs and use of center; coordinates schedules in order to insure adequate staffing of unit.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of: principles, rules, materials, and youth developmental sports equipment requirements of gymnastics/ dance activities.
Ability to: plan, organize and oversee a specialized recreational activity; stimulate interest and enthusiasm of various age groups in  gymnastics, youth sports ; organize and direct the work of others; administer first aid; perform activities requiring physical strength and endurance; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Instructional ability: able to demonstrate the execution of beginner through advanced  levels of gymnastics, dance, and youth sports instructions.
Skill in: execution of gymnastics/ dance and youth sports activities; use and care of pertinent equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of one (1) year of college with one (1) year of experience in teaching/coaching gymnastics, or youth sports; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a: Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate within six (6) months of appointment; a valid Florida driver's license may be required; U.S.A. Gymnastics Safety Certification within one (1) year of appointment.
Examination
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
Comments
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
