Telecom Electrician Apprentice
This position closed to TECO internal team members (IBEW Bid #21-08U) on March 3, 2021 with no qualified candidates applying.
The hourly rate on this IBEW covered position is $26.47.
Must have and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License with a good driving record.
Must be able to respond to emergency and scheduled overtime.
PHYSICAL:
Must successfully pass a physical worker exam and Ishihara Color Vision test.
Must be able to accurately distinguish all fiber optic and copper cable colors.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more.
WORK CONDITIONS:
Must demonstrate the ability to work in confined spaces, perform basic aerial bucket work activity, and be able to correctly identify all fiber optic cable colors, when tested.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is an IBEW craft position responsible for performing tasks associated with Telecommunications systems required to support the successful operation of the Tampa Electric Company and TECO Energy communications networks.
• Operate Bucket Truck
• Properly terminate communications cables.
• Read and understand communications circuit diagrams.
• Set voice and data channels on channel banks.
• Patch cable pairs per circuit drawings
• Install, test, and repair Fiber Optic Cable, to include the fusion splicing
• Assist technicians on maintenance and installation of all systems.
• Attend and receive any required training or certifications.
• Perform other duties as assigned by manager or supervisor.
This position (Telecommunications Electrician Apprentice (TEA) is the starting job for the Telecommunications Department Progression (e.g., TEA, TEI and TEII); new applicants entering this classification will be required to meet the training and technical job-related requirements to advance through the progression.  Applicants must successfully pass the required skills test (up or out) in order to remain in their classification.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:
Degree must be from an institution accredited by the Commissions on Colleges
A 2-year AS/AA degree in Electronics or Electronics Engineering/Technology from a regionally accredited institution obtained within the last 6 years.  A trade school certification in US Armed Forces Electronics training curriculum may be considered upon review.
OR
A valid high school diploma/GED and have worked full-time as a telecommunications technician 3 of the previous 6 years.
Must successfully complete a realistic job preview consisting of general scope of work orientation, demonstrate the ability to work in confined spaces, perform basic aerial bucket work activity, and be able to match all fiber optic cable colors.
• Safely use truck-mounted booms and enter areas such as manholes and cable vaults to install, maintain, or inspect equipment.
• Upon successful completion of the realistic job preview and matching all fiber optic cable colors, candidate must score 100% on the Ishihara color test that includes a series of color plates.
• Must achieve 70% or higher on the Operations Test Battery (OTB).
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience in maintaining electronics equipment is desirable.
Training, certification, and experience in the following areas preferred:  Basic Networking, Synchronous Optical Network (SONET), Carrier Ethernet and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems provisioning and maintenance.
Residence within 45 minutes of 78th Street location (ESA) is highly desired.
