The Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) of the University of South Florida (USF) and Tampa General Hospital (TGH) are conducting a national search for a President of the newly formed University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians.
Organization Background
In July of 2020, Tampa General Hospital and the University of South Florida announced the formation of an enhanced clinical affiliation, a significant milestone that will further solidify one of the largest academic medical centers in Florida and build upon their longstanding relationship and commitment to improving health care in Tampa Bay. TGH and USF have worked closely together for nearly 50 years since the opening of the medical school in the early 1970s. This new endeavor builds on this longstanding relationship and will enable the two organizations to advance more quickly and broadly on a variety of strategic goals.
As part of this new clinical affiliation, University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians was formed as a Florida not-for-profit corporation by filing its articles of incorporation with the Florida Secretary of State on Aug. 24, 2020. University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians is organized for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes and to coordinate the integrated clinical services of Tampa General Medical Group (TGMG) and USF’s MCOM practice plan.
The formation of University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians will enable the two organizations to align administrative and clinical practice areas into a new organization. Both organizations are working to create Florida’s leading academic medical center dedicated to outstanding patient care, education and research. The restructuring will allow TGH and USF Health to combine resources and work together more seamlessly to provide tightly coordinated, seamless patient care. The new affiliation also will benefit the private practice physicians on staff at Tampa General Hospital by offering purchased services and management services through the new company. It is anticipated more than 1,600 staff will transition to University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians.
Tampa General Medical Group (TGMG) is an affiliate of TGH and includes a multispecialty team of physicians specializing in internal medicine, digestive disorders, cardiology, endocrinology, family practice, hepatology, transplantation, pediatrics, and surgery. TGH’s footprint includes 17 Tampa General Medical Group Primary Care offices in practice locations throughout Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties.
USF’s MCOM practice plan includes more than 600 principal faculty physicians* and 300 advanced practice practitioners (APPs), including social workers, psychologists, audiologists, APRNs and PAs across 37 specialties. USF Health physicians practice in multiple affiliated hospitals and outpatient clinics in the area, including the Carol & Frank Morsani Center for Advanced Healthcare (located on USF’s main Tampa campus) and the South Tampa Center for Advanced Healthcare (located next to TGH on Davis Islands).
With over 1,000 providers and 46 locations, University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians will be the largest multispecialty medical group on Florida’s west coast.
The Opportunity
The new President of University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians will provide executive leadership to a vast network of more than 1,000 providers geographically distributed across Florida’s west coast. The President will serve as a senior executive of USF/TGH, contributing to the strategic, operational, clinical and academic missions of both organizations. The President will report to the University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians Board of Directors and oversee more than 1,380 staff employees.
The role of President of University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians represents an exciting opportunity to further develop a high-quality, integrated program of clinical care and population health management embedded in an academic health system that is a regional market leader. The successful candidate for this senior leadership role will be an exceptional leader in health care delivery services with the values and proven skills needed to provide effective leadership in a period of transformation. The President must have the business acumen and cultural sensitivity to manage a complex organization and demonstrate the interpersonal skills that will assure successful relationship building with a variety of external and internal stakeholders, including state government figures, donors, and affiliated organizations. The President must be a consensus builder, but also capable of serving as an agent for change.
The successful candidate will have 10 years of demonstrated accomplishment as an executive in a large multispecialty group practice or substantial experience with P&L responsibilities and profitable outcomes in a comparable environment. A proven track record in leading a multispecialty group to strong and consistent financial, quality, safety, and satisfaction (physician, staff, patient) performance in a competitive marketplace is required.
