Full Job Description Machine Operator 1
BASIC PURPOSE:
The role of the Machine Operator 1 is to produce various forms of mail using production machinery and utilizing customer specifications, established quality standards and basic United States Postal Service (USPS) regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
General
*
• Operate one or multiple types of the various machines used in the production process.
• Can efficiently set-up and/or run most standard jobs.
• Set up machines based on work order specifications and lettershop sample.
• Examine products to verify conformance to quality standards using work orders and quality processes.
• Monitor the operating speed of machines during the production process.
• Measure, examine, or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments, such as micrometers.
• Set controls to regulate machining, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine controls.
• Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Evaluate experimental procedures, and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency and adaptability to setup and production.
• Request postage for meters, materials and equipment as necessary to complete tasks.
• Count finished products to determine if product orders are complete.
• Load and unload items from machines, package, etc.
• Affix postage to packages or letters by hand, or stamp materials, using postage meters.
• Perform all other duties as required by the department supervisor.
• Ensure quality and quantities of mail pieces meet customer specifications by using work order specifications, lettershop samples and USPS guides.
• Complete production logs and enter information into computer.
• Work with Production Shift Supervisors and coworkers to keep production moving at all times.
• Address quality concerns with Shift Supervisors, managers, etc. to prevent poor quality items from passing through production.
Additional Tasks
*
• May assist in the training process for new employees.
• Ensure quality and quantities of mail pieces meet customer specifications by using work order specifications, lettershop samples and USPS guides.
• Performs some basic mechanical repairs and adjustments to machinery as needed.
Safety/ Security/ Maintenance
*
• Perform safety inspections on machinery.
• Follow all established Safety Rules for operating machinery and building security.
• Clean and restock work area as needed to maintain a clean and safe work environment; this may include sweeping, taking out trash and/or using cleaning agents.

Hours Required
• 40 hours over a 5 day period; typically Monday through Friday. Scheduled days and times may vary based on need. Occasional overtime and weekend shifts may be required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Education
• High School Diploma or Equivalent Degree desired
Experience
• 0-5 years prior experience as a machine operator.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS CONTINUED:
• Quality Control Analysis- Inspecting products, services or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
• Use of Tools- Pallet jacks, wrapping devises, etc.
• Time Management- Managing one’s own time.
• Computer Usage- Using computers to navigate the internet, accurately manipulate data in spreadsheets or databases, typing text and/ or inserting pictures into word processing documents and emails.
