Job Description:
Summary/Objective: The Team Leader Sanitation supervises all sanitation and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) operations, conducts audits of food safety, and quality procedures of the plant to assure a safe, efficient, productive, and positive work environment.  This person consistently directs, coaches, trains and gives performance feedback to the associates performing sanitation duties.  All procedures and practices used are grounded in standards, regulations and laws addressing occupational safety (OSHA) and food safety and food quality (FDA) in addition to environmental safety (EPA) in accordance with Safe Quality Food (SQF) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Provide shift-focused supervision to the sanitation employees. Communicate routinely with employees to assure that all understand the day’s sanitation schedule, key issues, and challenges. Manage all cleaning and basic repair activities in accordance with the standards, regulations and laws governing food safety, food quality and environmental safety regulations and monitors and accurately documents all work done. Develops and monitors a cleaning routine plan for daily, weekly and monthly sanitation (Master Cleaning Schedule) in all parts of the plant. Develops and implements all sanitation-related procedures and audits to make sure procedures are followed. Ensures compliance with cleaning routine plan by utilizing routine observation, monthly walk-through inspections and reporting and distribution and tracking of open and closed sanitation work orders. Ensures that all standards for food safety and food quality are met and exceeded. Partners with QA Manager in conducting, analyzing and improving end results of the Environmental Sampling Program. Keeps work environment clean, safe and positive. Identifies problems or bottlenecks in sanitation processes and resolves issues. Assures the implementation of all food quality and food safety standards, laws, good manufacturing practices, training and continuous improvement. Manages Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system.  Serves as primary contact for pest control provider.  Monitors IPM Data and assures preemptive and corrective actions are taken. Identifies and documents the skills, performance opportunities, learning needs, time and attendance of each sanitation employee and teaches routinely. Assures all sanitation employees are consistently trained in all required standards and expectations, including temporary employees. Keeps work environment clean, safe and positive. Manages sanitation performance against plant goals in safety, quality, TMOS, cost, customer service and culture. Manages and supervises all OSHA compliance training for sanitation employees, including temporary employees. Works with the management team to develop safe work practices and implements them for effective safety that result in zero recordable and lost-time accidents and encourages safe work performance. Exudes a high degree of interpersonal skills and has the ability to work well with everyone. Assures fair and consistent application of policies, procedures, and discipline. Actively participates on the Food Safety & Quality continuous improvement process and TMOS as a subject matter expert in Sanitation. Follows and enforces standards for food safety and food quality production reflected in SQF as well as the regulations of major vendors and governmental agencies such as OSHA, FDA and EPA and assures employees are consistently trained in these standards and comply with all requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, walk, taste, and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position is active and requires standing, walking, kneeling, twisting, holding, gripping, reaching, pulling, stooping, extensive bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, extensive wrist movements, and climbing stairs. Work can be performed in extreme heat and cold environments. Must possess manual dexterity necessary to handle product appropriately. The employee must be able to lift and/or move items weighing 35 pounds. The employee must be able to read, write, and comprehend the English language. The employee must work safely at all times and follow all OSHA (safety) guidelines.
Food Quality, Safety and Security: The employee initiates action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities relating to food safety and the quality of the product, processes, quality or safety system.  The employee stops production, if necessary, to correct food safety issues, quality issues, or safety problems.  The employee identifies and records any problems relating to food safety, quality of the product, processes, quality system or safety system.  The employee controls further processing or delivery of nonconforming product in terms of food safety or quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.  The employee informs line supervisor, production manager, QA manager, or other management personnel of any food safety or quality issues or of any processes which become noncompliant with specified requirements.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position supervises the Sanitation employees.  This position is responsible for general direction, coordination and evaluation of employees in accordance with policies and laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and discipline employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, heat, cold, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full­-time position.  The employee is expected to work the hours necessary to complete the job accurately, thoroughly, and within given deadlines.
Travel: Little travel is expected for this position.
Required Education and Experience: Associates degree in Sanitation or a related field or equivalent work experience.  A minimum of five years of sanitation work experience required, food manufacturing preferred.  Three years supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment.  Working knowledge of production equipment and systems.  Working knowledge of food safety and food quality standards and regulations such as SQF and environmental and safety regulations.  Competency in English language (read, write, speak); excellent written, oral and listening skills.  Knowledge of regulations of major vendors and governmental agencies such as FDA, OSHA, and EPA.  Requires basic mathematical skills to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide combined with analytical skills used to track and trend data and be able to use that data to guide decisions and communications with associates.  Working knowledge of HACCP preferred.  Proficient use of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  Ability to facilitate cross-functional teams.  Ability to effectively present information to top management.
