Position Overview As a Transportation/Fleet Manager, you will oversee the operations of the fleet for their assigned distribution center and are accountable for achieving Transportation operating and service goals while ensuring results meet or exceed customer expectations for product quality and service reliability, speed and accuracy. In this position, you will develop the operating plan and budget for the fleet, and will be accountable for achieving overall operating results consistent with individual and company performance goals. You will be responsible for pre- and post- trip inspections, preventative maintenance records, driver logs and tractor and trailer availability and are accountable for releasing only safe and road-worthy vehicles for Transportation services. In addition, as Manager, you will supervise training of dispatchers and drivers, and ensure team members are provided ongoing skills development coaching to improve their job performance and advancement potential within the organization. Job Description Responsibilities
• Create high customer service and productivity expectations among transportation team members, monitor individual and team performance and take action to correct performance gaps and/or address improvement opportunities.
• Assess daily and weekly output, identify trends in productivity and oversee the allocation of people and equipment to address day-to-day and week-to-week variations in demand and capacity across assigned divisions, warehouses, manufacturing plants and stores.
• Direct the selection and use of profitable transportation lanes; accountable for achieving backhaul revenue goals.
• Lead the development of safe work practices and conditions; accountable for maintaining a safe environment for team members, visitors to the distribution center and travelers on the highways who come in contact with trucks, trailers and drivers.
• Review and evaluate performance of transportation functions, address performance gaps and take corrective action, as needed, to ensure work teams and individuals are delivering on operating and service goals.
• Assess business conditions, evaluate transportation lanes and take action to address near term opportunities to improve service, reduce costs and enhance operational results of the fleet, dispatchers and drivers.
• Oversee scheduling of transportation services and initiate short and long term planning with dispatchers, stores, warehouses and manufacturing plants to ensure transportation needs are met under different and changing business conditions.
• Prepare operating budgets for the fleet, review and finalize operating budgets with the transportation operations manager, and develop and implement work processes to ensure achievement of budgetary and service goals.
• Lead the development of improved work processes and procedures to enhance productivity and effectiveness of assigned work teams, equipment and space; accountable for achieving incremental results from the implementation of these improvements.
• Direct inspection processes and record keeping ensuring tractors and trailers are properly used and maintained.
• Identify gaps in effectiveness of transportation work processes and worker performance which contribute to excessive failures in service and equipment and take corrective action, as needed.
• Conduct performance appraisals, coach direct reports to enhance individual and team performance, and ensure drivers are properly trained and certified for over-the-road transport and equal opportunity for professional advancement.
• Assist in the development of individual and team performance improvement goals to support achievement of company objectives.
• Oversee the monitoring and purchasing of fuel.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Five (5) years work experience in retail operations, distribution, transportation, logistics
and/or supply chain management or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with fleet management, transportation planning and routing, logistics and / or fleet maintenance management and D.O.T. regulations
Knowledge of transportation services, routes, freight costs and freight lane cost and service optimization
Good computer skills, including experience using Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and other software applications
Able to communicate complex and detailed information verbally and in writing
Able to handle multiple tasks, organize, and coordinate activities effectively in complex or stressful situations
Strong problem solving and analytical skills
Strong leadership skills, including team facilitation, training, and motivation
Adept at preparing and delivering an address or presentation in a business setting
High standard of integrity and reliability
Authorization to work in the United States or the ability to obtain the same
