ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The USF College of Engineering and the Morsani College of Medicine are partnering to advance the strategic planning, success, and goals of the University of South Florida in STEM areas. Taking advantage of noteworthy opportunities for research and student success embodied in the growing field of biomedical engineering (BME), we have created a new Department of Medical Engineering jointly sponsored and governed by the colleges of engineering (COE) and medicine (MCOM).  The joint biomedical engineering program will contribute to USF's key mission areas of promoting student success, clinical and basic research, entrepreneurship and economic development in the region, state, and nation.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The biological scientist position will perform daily research activities which broadly include cell culture, work with preclinical models, molecular biology, histology, and to support laboratory operations. The scientist in this position will meet with the Principle Investigator (PI) on a regular basis to review research protocols (prepared by the PI) and will be expected to carry out experiments to completion.  This position is grant funded.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Experiments: Tasks may include techniques such as RNA extraction and qRT- PCR, proteomics (Western blots, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry), preclinical tumor models, and cell and tissue imaging.
• Data Collection and Record Keeping-Provides the PI results of research outcomes with raw data, in image files, Microsoft Excel or Word files, PDF files, or other media. Raw data are expected to be well-organized for record keeping.
• Training: Maintains up-to-date records of training certificates demonstrating compliance for all relevant oversight agencies governing research duties at USF (e.g. IACUC, IBC, EH&S). Demonstrates research techniques and Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) to students and additional new staff.
• Assists the PI in maintaining ongoing laboratory functions including ordering, record keeping, coordinating shipment and delivery, assisting with lab inspectors, and assisting the PI in preparing research protocols to comply with University regulations.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
• This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural, physical or medical science.
• Progressively responsible experience involving scientific laboratory or field work may be substituted for the required college education on a year for year basis.
PREFERRED:
• Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline.
• Experience in laboratory techniques mentioned above.
