The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District), a leader in protecting Florida's water resources, is seeking a reliable Heavy Equipment Operator in support of the Operations bureau. As the heavy equipment operator, you will be responsible for mowing, cleaning, shaping, and maintaining roads and canal banks, conducting cut and/or fill operations, maintaining bed profiles of waterways, disking and chopping underbrush, removing logs and debris, installing filter fabric, rip rap rock and other materials utilizing a variety of heavy equipment to maintain District lands. The Heavy Equipment Operator will also assist in operating forestry equipment for various tasks including prescribed burning, land management related activities, and projects on District lands. Compensation: Heavy Equipment Operator: $16.19 to $18.09 per hour Staff Heavy Equipment Operator: $17.24 to $19.27 per hour The starting salary ranges are included for the Heavy Equipment Operator profile which reflects the minimum to approximately 50% of the respective pay grades . The starting salary will be based on the education and experience of the successful candidate. The District conducts annual performance evaluations that may award applicable pay increases based on positive employee performance. Essential Functions • Performs mowing operations utilizing a batwing mower and tractor to maintain canals and waterways on District lands
• Uses line trimmers, zero-turn mowers, chainsaws, trailers, and other equipment to maintain District fence-lines, culverts, and water control structures
• Applies herbicide in the maintenance of canals and District lands
• Participates in prescribed burns and performs wildfire suppression
• Operates bull dozers, front-end loaders, back-hoes, light and heavy tractors, dump trucks, transports, light and heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and other equipment used to maintain District canals, levees, roads, and conservation lands
• Completes work orders, enters vehicle utilization data, completes employee time sheets, and checks and responds to District emails as required
• Knowledge of basic computer skills
Working Conditions Work is conducted outdoors and involves trades and grounds maintenance. Extensive travel, generally during the work day, is required to inspect and maintain work sites which are often located in remote, undeveloped, and isolated areas. Loads, unloads, transports equipment, operates and maintains field equipment such as tractor with bush hog mower, disk and chainsaws. Assists Land Management on prescribed burns/wildfires. Ability to lift and carry 30 pound pack while walking, up to 50% of shift. May be required to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally. May be required to work at heights of a maximum of 30 feet. May be exposed to extremely hot, humid weather conditions, mosquitoes and other pests. May be exposed to elements including sun and rain during entire work period. Must be able to bend, squat, and climb on a regular basis. Must be able to drive for extended periods. Satisfactory completion of a work capacity test is required every two years.

Required Credentials for Heavy Equipment Operator Opportunities • High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Heavy Equipment Operator:
• Three (3) years related work experience
• Required to obtain a valid Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement within one (1) year of hire (at District's expense)
• Required to obtain a valid S130/190 Burn Certificate within one (1) year of hire (at District's expense)
• Staff Heavy Equipment Operator:
• Four (4) years related work experience
• Valid Class A CDL
• Valid S130/190 Burn Certificate
• Required to obtain Tanker Endorsement for CDL within one (1) year of hire (at District's expense)
• Valid driver’s license
Preferred Credentials for Heavy Equipment Operator Opportunities • Certification/Training in:
• All-terrain vehicles
• CPR/First Aid
• Chainsaws

Additional Details This position is typically scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday to Thursday, out of the Tampa, FL office. This position is eligible for overtime pay for hours worked over 40 hours, in a week.
The Heavy Equipment Operator is a safety sensitive position. As such, the employee will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
Travel Required Yes. Extensive travel, using a District vehicle, within District's coverage area.
