Full Job Description QLM has an immediate opening for industrial painters and sandblasters in the Tampa Bay area at multiple locations:
Position Summary:
Abrasive blasts surface of metal or hard composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt to achieve a specified finish. Applies paint or similar type coatings either by spraying, brushing, or rolling on to surfaces.
Working Conditions:
Scheduled workdays cover Monday thru Friday. Weekends and holidays as required. Works in all kinds of weather. Maybe required to perform work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to electrical and mechanical hazards, ultra violet light, vibrations, noise working on scaffolding and ladders at height, working over water, and working alone in confined spaces. Subject to very dramatic temperature changes such as when entering or exiting a tank. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hardhats, safety shoes or boots (Steel), and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.
Essential Job Functions (listing most important first):
1. Masks specified areas of objects to protect from blasting if necessary.
2. Shovels or pours abrasives such as sand, grit, or steel shot of specified grade into machine hopper.
3. Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive material flowing through nozzle.
4. Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasives over surface of parts. Manually directs nozzle over area to be blasted.
5. Blasts in enclosed and open areas using proper protective clothing and equipment.
6. Examines finished parts to ensure conformance to specifications.
7. Cleans sand and debris from work area.
8. Masks specified areas of objects not to be painted to protect from unwanted overspray.
9. Washes surfaces to remove grease, rust, scale, and dirt, using soap and water, or with other solvents.
10. Fills cracks and holes with patching materials if necessary. Smooths surfaces using sand paper, sanding machines, or hand scraper.
11. Mixes components of paint and thins to obtain proper consistency and color according to specification.
12. Sprays, rolls, or brushes specified amount or thickness of primer, intermediate, and top coat; which can be paint, varnish, stain, sealer, or other industrial type coating.
13. May layout and paint insignias, symbols, designs, or other markings according to specifications.
14. Paints in enclosed and open areas using proper protective clothing and equipment.
Sandblaster/Painter

15. May set up ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, and scaffolding prior to painting.
16. Examines finished parts to insure conformance to specifications.
17. Cleans, maintains, and repairs all blasting and painting equipment.
18. Performs any combination of incidental tasks such as transporting tools, materials, supplies, load materials or work pieces onto racks, operates overhead cranes and company vehicles, returns any excess supplies for proper storage or disposal.
Essential Job Requirements:
Education and Vocational: Must be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically.
Physical Requirements:
Repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.
This position is classified as heavy work exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements exceed those for medium work.
