POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision and/or direction of Shift Charge Nurse or designee, performs various duties assisting Nurses in treatment and care of patients in accordance with established methods and policies of the hospital.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES:
1. Patient Treatment Activities
a. Performs routine and non-sterile treatment procedures and records
b. Assists nurses in complicated treatment procedures.
2. Patient Care Activities
a. Helps prepare unit, patient room, and bed for receiving patient, admission, returning surgical patient, transfer or emergencies.
b. Assist in and as necessary, accompanies patient in the admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
c. Provides morning care, evening care, and other general care throughout the day and records.
d. As directed, takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, abdominal girth, specific gravity, Clinitest/Acetest, blood pressure, intake/output measurements, other treatments as applicable and recording such.
e. Assists with pre-operative care, positioning patients, lifting and turning patient using proper body mechanics, respiratory aids, applying/utilizing special equipment as necessary, ambulating the patient as directed, and recording such.
f. Prepares patient for meals, distributes food trays, assists or feeds patients as necessary, removes trays and records. Distributes drinking water and other nourishment to patients.
g. Performs general care activities for patients in isolation. Provides post-mortem care.
h. Makes rounds to assigned patients, anticipates patients needs, and answers/responds to patients call-lights/paging.
Position: Nursing Assistant
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Handles and cares for patients clothing and other personal property (including prosthetic devices, hearing aides, dentures, glasses, contact lenses, etc.) from admission through discharge of the patient.
2. Collects specimens, records on Bedside Flow Charts, transports to proper area as requested. Completes specimen requisition with initials and time collected.
3. Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient. Also contributes to nursing care plan:
4. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by:
a. Reporting equipment that is out of order.
b. Reporting other problems to charge nurse.
c. Cleaning equipment and preparing for sterilization.
d. Keeping dirty linen hamper covered and out of the vicinity of the clean linens.
5. Records care and treatment through thorough charting in the EMR.
5 . Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other hospital personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information.
6. Attends in-service programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, etc.
7. Attends all but 2 scheduled nursing meetings per year unless excused by Nursing Administration. PRN staff is only required to attend 2 per year.
8. Assists Activity Director with activities for swing bed patients.
9. Reports to shift charge nurse.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, ABILITIES):
1. High School graduate or equivalent work experience, including ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology.
2. Previous experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred.
3. Good physical and mental health, able to work under pressure, and relate to patients, hospital staff, and visitors.
4. Must have excellent interpersonal relationship skills.
OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, ETC.)
1. Nurse Aide Certification through the state of Kentucky preferred.
2. Maintains current certification as Basic CPR Provider.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Lifting varied weights, pulling, and standing for long periods of time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work areas often cramped around patient’s beds. Required use of various machinery. Also, possible exposure to body fluids, blood, and various infectious diseases.
