This position requires a valid Class  B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
• three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
• any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
• a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
• a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a CDL, applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.  Click here to register for the Clearinghouse.  A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, tractor trailer, drainage vacuum truck, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.  Cleans and washes equipment.
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.  Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).   Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: MATHEMATICAL CALCULATIONS; STANDARD SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES.  SKILLED IN:  OPERATING A VARIETY OF HAND AND POWER TOOLS; OPERATING AND PERFORMING MINOR MAINTENANCE ON SMALL/MEDIUM EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES.  ABILITY TO:  OPERATE A VARIETY OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT ; READ AND UNDERSTAND JOB-RELATED MATERIALS AND FILL OUT REPORTS AND FORMS; MAINTAIN AND REPAIR HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES; COMMUNICATE BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, INCLUDING FOLLOWING ORAL/WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS; DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS; LIFT, CARRY, AND HANDLE UP TO 50 POUNDS; STOOP, CLIMB, SQUAT, PUSH, PULL, CRAWL OR BEND ON A FREQUENT BASIS; WORK OUTDOORS IN VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS ON VARIOUS TERRAINS AND AT VARIOUS HEIGHTS OR IN HIGH VOLUME TRAFFIC; WORK INDEPENDENTLY; STAND FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.
OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies.  While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.  The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Obtains certification in Maintenance of Traffic - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains. Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Drivers License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 180 days of hire.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Requires one year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment. Possess a valid Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit is required at time of hire.  A valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes is required within 180 days of hire and maintain it.

A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $769.60 will be added to the annual salary.
