GENERAL SUMMARY Performs quality control and microbiology laboratory tests. Assists the Laboratory Manager on matters pertaining to the Laboratory. Documents culture results and reports clinical findings.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Monitors function and temperatures of all laboratory equipment. Performs routine cleaning of laboratory equipment.
2. Logs in and receives all incoming cultures into computer.
3. Performs quality control checks on all specimen paperwork received in the laboratory.
4. Performs quality control checks on specimens received in the laboratory for proper collection and labeling.
5. Performs/conducts multiple laboratory tests manually or by utilizing manufactured test kits for the definitive identification of microbial organisms.
6. Prepares various reagents for laboratory use.
7. Documents all laboratory test results. Repeats any test with questionable/abnormal results. Informs Laboratory Manager of confirmed abnormal results.
8. Orders, receives and stores all incoming laboratory supplies.
9. Maintains archive serum/tissue.
10. Maintains the sub culture of quality control organisms.
11. Responsible for performing and resulting residual moisture testing of bone samples
12. Responsible for documentation/data entry of test samples sent to outside laboratories.
13. Performs environmental monitoring of the processing areas on a rotating schedule to include: sample collection, interpretation and resulting.
14. Performs and documents quality control for all identification test kits and various media used in the laboratory.
15. Required when needed to participate in the tracking, receiving and processing of coolers containing donated tissue (including evenings, weekends and holidays on a call rotation).
16. Remains abreast of developments in the field(s) of Medical Technology/Tissue Banking by reviewing pertinent literature, attending seminars and continuing education programs as deemed appropriate by the Laboratory Manager.
17. Participates in the proficiency testing (CAP three times/year and LLTB bi-annually).
18. Participates in the organization and direction of ancillary work performed by the Company.
19. Assists Quality Assurance department when necessary.
20. Responsible for segregating of biological and pathological waste generated by the laboratory.
21. Responsible for the distribution of laboratory reports.
22. Participates in inter-departmental staff exchanges.
Job Specifications 1. Work requires an Associates degree or Bachelors Degree in Biological Science or Medical Technology.
2. Work requires licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a Laboratory Technologist by the State of Florida.
3. Work requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time.
4. Work requires a minimum of 1 year clinical microbiology laboratory experience.
5. Work requires the manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary to perform microbiological biochemical work up and microscopic specimens.
6. Work requires the ability to (a) perform laboratory tests; (b) interpret test results noting abnormalities and discrepancies; (c) perform calculations; (d) troubleshoot instruments.
7. Work requires the interpersonal ability to interact with management and staff.
Working Conditions Work requires extended hours during peak processing and/or procurement periods. Hazardous conditions include, but are not limited to, the possible exposure to microorganisms, viruses, chemicals and potentially infectious body fluids. TB Risk Classification: Medium
