What you’ll be doing...
This is a leadership role that will require team leadership skills and technical expertise in developing and scaling data science and AI capabilities at a large enterprise, preferably at a Fortune 50 company or at a technology startup that has successfully scaled to a billion plus in annual revenue over the past decade.
Reporting to the VP of Verizon’s AI Center, this individual will play a leadership role in building and developing a team of highly skilled Data Scientists. The Director will lead a team of data scientists focused on a specific problem space, for example, workforce productivity, customer retention, personalization, demand forecasting, etc. This leader will drive our team, talent, and best practices. The AI capabilities will include predictive, prescriptive and adaptive models, experimentation platform, and end to end model lifecycle management for all predictions across Verizon. These will need to be implemented on premise, in cloud and on the edge and in both real-time and batch mode depending upon the business applications.

Therefore, it will be critical that this candidate possess previous experience with leading large data science and AI efforts, attracting and retaining top talent, and building a team and culture that promotes curiosity and collaborations with a strong commitment to creating value for Verizon’s customers, employees, stakeholders and the society.
An ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, critical thinking, and strategic thinking skills above and beyond the technical knowledge and leadership skills required for this position.

• A successful team will be able to experiment and bring relevant data science techniques, algorithms, and tools to the organization and embed into ways of working for data science teams.
Influence Business Partners
• Operate as an expert both within Verizon and externally within industry
• Serve as a technical thought leader and advisor to the organization
• Serve as trusted advisor to our business partners
• Shape and communicate a clear vision, strategy and roadmap to all stakeholders
Elevate the AI Practice
• Establish best practices and governance routines to ensure adherence to model management policies, peer reviews, and compliance to our policy standards for privacy, ethics, and bias.
• Stay informed on the latest advancements in AI and technology space, finding ways to deliver value by applying and customizing these to our specific problem space.
• Help create an environment where our scientists are engaged in pioneering work that can be shared with the world in a number of ways like open source, publications, etc.
• Inspire our team to create monetizable AI applications that can be leveraged both within Verizon and externally with Verizon’s partners.
Qualifications:
• Must have at least 5+ years of experience leading and building data science teams and talent
• Must have experience delivering business outcomes in large and complex business organizations or fast growing startup businesses.
• Must have good understanding and ability to explain both the code and the underlying math used in algorithms/models. Strong coding proficiency in python, java, R, etc. Knowledge of AI/ML models, frameworks(keras, pytorch, etc.) and libraries/packages/apis (e.g., scikit)
• Advanced knowledge of math, probability, statistics, and models
• Experience with Hadoop, AWS/GCP/Azure or other distributed compute services and cloud environments
• Exposure to data structures, data modeling and software architecture
• Excellent communication skills
• Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills
• Outstanding analytical and problem solving skills
• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or similar field is preferred
