Sonographer is proficient in one of the following three areas:
1. Vascular Sonographer – Displays high degree of proficiency of scanning knowledge. Performs upper/lower arterial and venous vascular studies (also carotid studies – with measurements and manipulation – augmentations and segmental pressures). Has a strong knowledge base of vascular anatomy.
2. Cardiac Sonographer – Proficient in performing complete echocardiographic studies, which include 2D studies, M-mode, spectral Doppler, color flow Doppler, treadmill stress test, exercise stress echocardiograms, chemical stress echocardiograms, contrast echocardiograms. Has a strong knowledge base of cardiovascular anatomy and works with cardiologist.
3. Echo Vascular Sonographer – Displays high degree of proficiency of scanning knowledge in both echo and vascular studies. Performs upper and lower arterial, venous, carotid studies and complete echocardiographic studies as delineated above.
Under the limited supervision of the Manager and as prescribed by a physician, the Sonographer performs sonographic procedures to assist in the diagnosis of disease. The sonographer works effectively with patients and patient’s families to maintain a cooperative relationship with the interdepartmental personnel.
Position Requirements
Education: Graduation from a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, or Cardiovascular Technology program, that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required.
Experience: Minimum one year.

Must hold and maintain appropriate credential in echocardiography:
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CRCS), Sonography Canada
Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
Skills: Skill in production of sonograms meeting physician’s expectations. Skill in obtaining information via the computer. Demonstrates self-motivation in performing job duties.

Duties
• Assumes responsibility for safety and physical comfort of the patient while in Sonographer’s care.
• Verifies procedure request versus physician’s order.
• Explains procedure to patient and obtains essential information patient, medical records and previous scans for clinical correlation. Instructs patient regarding proper physiological requirements for the procedure.

• Assists patient transfer to sono exam table and ensures adequate patient immobilization for scan.
• Positions patients based on required imaging sequences as per protocol.
• Selects proper machine parameters and scan transducer.
• Performs procedure as per protocol established in imaging laboratory.
• Selects appropriate scan images to store for physician review.
• Knows how to change scanning parameters to improve scan image quality.
• Obtains diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient’s body with the scan head, store images, perform measurements, fill out preliminary report and submit diagnostic exam to physician for interpretation.
• Operates sonographic equipment throughout clinic relating to all special cardiac ultrasound procedures.
