The Florida Department of Health is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.
Senior Health Educator
The Senior Health Educator is responsible for providing advanced breastfeeding services with the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Program as required. The successful applicant will perform assessments for breastfeeding mothers and babies as the Designated Breastfeeding Expert. This employee is also responsible for issuing and educating clients on breastfeeding aids to improve their breastfeeding experience. This employee assists the Breastfeeding Coordinator with providing staff training, implementing breastfeeding activities, and attending community events. This employee provides direct services under the direction and supervision of the Senior Public Health Nutrition Supervisor.
This employee may be assigned to provide breastfeeding services as required between multiple clinics throughout the county, varied times and days. This position requires travel.
Responsibilities include:
• Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding clients in the clinic and/or by telephone, keeping an accurate record of all client contacts made. Performs pre-and post-feed weight checks for breastfeeding dyads. Performs “Hands On” Policy and Procedures for IBCLCs as required.
• Assists Breastfeeding Coordinator with developing, presenting, and evaluating required breastfeeding training. Promotes WIC services and breastfeeding at outreach and community events. Serves as WIC breastfeeding point of contact for Healthy Start Women and Infant Resource Specialists. Serves as liaison with community partners to provide breastfeeding support.
• Provide technical support and training for Breastfeeding Peer Counselors.
• Refers clients to WIC clinic staff and community resources as appropriate.
• Submits and approves reports such as travel, People First and Health Management System (HMS) within the timeframe assigned.
• Conducts and/or attends health related meetings, staff meetings, committees, and work groups. Assists with outreach activities, health fairs and other community activities as needed.
• Seeks to improve professional development within the scope of public health by way of approved workshops and training activities. Completes related assignments as necessary.
• At times employee may be scheduled or assigned to work in other locations within Hillsborough County; travels to clinics and performs other duties as assigned by Senior Public Health Nutrition Supervisor.
• If fluent in another language, you may be required to assist with translating to ensure quality.
Minimum Qualifications:
• International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant is required.
• Valid Driver’s License is required to obtain reimbursement for travel according to policy.
• At least one year of experience providing advanced breastfeeding support.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Fluent reading, writing, and speaking both English and Spanish
