Job Description
Purpose of the Position
The LMS Administrator plays a key role in the delivery and support of the LMS environment which includes the Blackboard LMS (Learn, Community Engagement, Content Management, and Mobile systems), Blackboard Collaborate synchronous collaboration platform, and Starfish retention software. This position is responsible for overseeing testing and installation activities for all system updates, service pack/patch upgrades, building blocks, and other software integrated with the Blackboard LMS. This work is done in collaboration and partnership with internal and external teams including, but not limited to, Compliance, Curriculum/Instructional Design, Education, Learner Services, and Information Technology to establish standards, policies and procedures, and strategic plans for use and expansion of the LMS environment and its integrated products/processes
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
• Maintaining current knowledge, developing new skills in alignment with system functionality, and serving as a subject matter expert for academic technology products.
• Analyzing systems factors for academic technology products - including input/output requirements, information flow, hardware/software requirements, and reliability.
• Developing and maintaining documentation for new or existing academic technology products.
• Configuring, maintaining, and performing accurate QA for the LMS environment and its integrated products/processes, landing page and user interface; and coordinating with Marketing regarding and its partner institutions' Internet presence with the landing page, Community System, and other related systems containing public information.
• Testing and installing system updates, service pack/patch upgrades, building blocks, and other software integrated with the Blackboard LMS.
• Provisioning, maintaining, and archiving data in the LMS environment and integrated products/processes.
• Executing user account/access provisioning within the Blackboard LMS environment, including but not limited to managing user profiles/roles and user accounts; and changing passwords.
• Managing and maintaining course/organization data within the Blackboard LMS environment, including but not limited to: updating course properties; creating and cloning courses templates, development shells, and live sections; creating and cloning organizations; enrolling users; and exporting, archiving, and backing up courses/organizations.
• Configuring and maintaining the community areas and content collection within the LMS environment, including but not limited to Tabs, Modules, Channels, Brands, Themes, Tool Panel, Institutional Hierarchies, and other Communities Settings.
• Supporting curriculum designers and instructional technologists in the areas of course material and multimedia storage, course cloning, coping, backing, retrieving and setup processes within the LMS environment.
• Preparing and managing change management requests and incident reports.
• Providing technical support to users of the LMS environment.
• Supporting LMS problem escalation and reporting process.
• Verifying, submitting, and tracking product bugs/issues to ensure prompt resolution by our vendor's support teams.
• Performing routine LMS business process audits and checks, and compile performance metrics.
• Providing guidance and work leadership to product specialists.
• Facilitating regular meetings and ensuring ongoing communication with business/function leaders regarding the LMS environment and integrated products/processes.
• Partnering with Information Technology staff for system upgrades, maintenance, and issues to ensure the LMS environment is working optimally to meet business requirements.
• Conducting after-hours and weekend on call responsibilities as assigned.
• Participating in special projects as required.
• Demonstrates knowledge of, and carefully follows all applicable federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, CIE, and internal UMA policies and procedures.
• Effectively communicates compliance requirements to students and other staff as appropriate and quickly escalates any compliance concerns to the Compliance department.
Education/Experience Preferred
• Experience with programming languages and web development technologies such as HTML (5.0+), CSS3, PHP (5.0+), jQuery, XML/HTML/DHTML, JavaScript, JSP (2.0+), and AJAX.
• Experience with graphic design and web content development, including competency using Adobe Creative Suite 5.5+ (Dreamweaver CS and Photoshop CS).
• Experience with mobile technologies.
• Experience with podcasting and streaming video technologies.
• Familiarity with student retention software, preferably Starfish.
• Familiarity with Student Information Systems (preferably CampusVue).
• Experience with SDLC and project management best practices.
• 3-5 years' experience in for profit education sector (Allied Health a plus) or higher education.
Associated Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Strong knowledge of the LMS architecture (preferably Blackboard Learn 9.1), and including course and role/user administration, system upgrade, and application integration/building block installation and maintenance.
• Strong knowledge of synchronous collaboration tools (preferably Blackboard Collaborate).
• MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH BrightSpace OR DESIRE 2 LEARN D2L
• Demonstrated knowledge of Internet browsers, including competency troubleshooting issues regarding browser compatibility for all platforms and end user peripherals.
• General knowledge of database architecture and management.
• Advanced skills in personal computing, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
• General knowledge of instructional design, training design and delivery methodologies, and e-learning standards.
• Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to present evaluations and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
