ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The mission of the Institute of Applied Engineering is to provide agile, best value engineering products and services to enhance the performance, effectiveness and safety of its customers. The Institute's customers include the Department of Defense, other federal, state and local agencies, and industry. In support of its mission, the Institute performs applied research in alignment with the following core competencies: Autonomous Systems; Human Performance Enhancement; Data Analytics; Cyber and Electromagnetic Domain Security; and Transportation and Energy infrastructure. As a DSO of USF, the Institute is a separately incorporated Florida 501(c)(3) authorized to use USF property, facilities, and personal services for the benefit of USF's research, development, and education mission. As such, the Institute's operations and research staff collaborate with USF faculty and students to develop and deliver these engineering solutions in support of its customers' requirements.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Systems Engineer will work closely with cross functional teams to develop requirements and solutions for the United States Department of Defense. In this role, the candidate will demonstrate leadership in communicating project goals, technical risk, and the system architecture for assigned projects.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in the Institute of Applied Engineering may require a security clearance or non-disclosure agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Systems Engineer is responsible for the overall management and execution of engineering project(s) and ensuring that the technical solutions and schedules are implemented in a timely manner. Analyzes system requirements and leads design and development activities.
Provides technical leadership for the integration of requirements, design, and technology. Develops technical documentation. Develops system architecture and system design documentation. Ensures that all control gates are met on schedule. Incorporates new plans, designs, and systems into ongoing operations.
Interacts with the Government regarding Systems Engineering technical considerations and associated problems, issues, or conflicts. Responsible for the technical integrity of work performed and deliverables associated with the Systems Engineering area of responsibility. Assists with the development of system requirements, functional requirements, and allocation to individual hardware, software, and components.
Coordinates the resolution of action items from design reviews, program reviews, test reviews, and Technical Interchange Meetings that require cross-discipline coordination.  Duties of this position will require the ability to develop Failure Modes / Effects Analyses and perform risk assessments; Experience with electro-mechanical systems, body worn systems, man portable communications systems, and soldier-borne electro-optical.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Master's degree in Engineering and at least two years of engineering research experience. A Ph.D. in Engineering may be substituted for the required work experience. Work experience may not be substituted for the Master's degree.
PREFERRED:
Master's degree in Engineering and at least four years of engineering research experience.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
• This position requires the willingness and ability to travel up to 25% of the time
• Must be eligible for a DoD Security Clearance
