This position will perform duties and responsibilities under general supervision. Provides automation engineering direction and technical assistance for the design, development, and execution of natural gas facilities; including but not limited to: compression, transmission, storage, measurement, regulation, and other related gas handling equipment/facilities. Performs engineering tasks and projects of moderate complexity, relying on established guidelines, general direction, and increasing experience. Routine technical assignments completed with support from Manager and senior engineers. Plans and conducts work requiring independent evaluation. Recognizes basic economic aspects of a job. Demonstrates professional conduct and business ethics. Ability to research and analyze relevant subject matter to perform job duties. Work experience and Company and industry training will familiarize employee with processes, procedures, guidelines, regulations, and policies of the Company, departments, and industry. Monitors economic aspects of job. Demonstrates professional conduct and business ethics.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Design
• Provide automation and controls engineering design support, development of project scope and estimate
• Design and support software related activities for PLC’s and HMI’s including development and diagnostic duties
• Provide guidance and provide design, support and analysis of EFM, SCADA, PLC, and telecommunications and process control installations
• Provide electrical and instrumentation engineering design support to the Company, as needed to complete annual capital and maintenance budgets
• Specify electrical and controls equipment and material
• Engineering design, including engineering calculations, or design coordination on projects
Monitor
• Familiarity with service contracts
• Provide remote and on-site project support and project commissioning
• Support the development of project budgets and assist with forecasting expenses
• Perform monitoring and diagnostics of raw data collection and data transfer
• Provide progress reports and other project related work for capital and maintenance projects
• Monitor facility designs for compliance with all business objectives, applicable regulations, and Company policies and procedures
• Develop knowledge of key automation equipment suppliers
• Initiate positive relationships with key suppliers, review supplier agreements and monitor supplier compliance
• Familiarization with industry standards and regulations as applied by AGA, FCC, NEC, DOT, ANSI, OSHA and other relevant regulations
Communication and Collaboration
• Support vendor quoting, selection and evaluation process
• Develop a working knowledge of flow computers, telecommunications equipment, engine and motor controls and state of the art technologies for the purpose of enhancing Company applications
• Develop a more thorough understanding of equipment and the operation and maintenance of automation and control systems
• Coordinate with third party engineering consulting firms to ensure facilities meet all applicable industry and Company standards and specifications
• Provide automation and controls engineering technical support, troubleshooting, and problem solving for operating issues relating to pipelines, gas regulating and measurement equipment, compressor station facilities, storage facilities, and other gas handling facilities
• Assist with Company equipment replacement plans
• Support senior engineers, Company or industry initiatives that enhance the overall safety, reliability, and efficiency of the gas transmission system
• Become familiar with Company Design Standards and Specifications and Other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
• Ba chelor’s Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (ECE) or Mechanical Engineering with emphasis in Controls or Automation or related engineering field (ABET – Accredited Engineering Program)
• 3 - 6 years of automation design experience specifying, designing, programming automation and control systems, PLC’s or HMI’s
• Valid driver’s license and insurability
• Ability to work overtime
• Ability to work in both an open office environment as well as outside in varied weather conditions
• Ability to read, understand, and apply directions, policies, procedures, guidelines, requirements, and regulations
• Ability to read and understand, project drawings (E&I, P&ID, piping, equipment, etc.),
• Ability to work independently or work successfully with individuals throughout organization
• Demonstrated problem-solving and interpersonal skills including teamwork skills
• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
• Attention to detail and possessing time management and project skills required to complete project objectives
• Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office applications or similar
• Experience working with direction to complete projects with defined timelines
Preferred:
• Demonstrated success in a design engineering or project lead role
• Understanding of software development and computer programming
