Position Summary
The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center (STRC) Manager is responsible for the oversite and coordination of daily operations of the center based out of The Florida Aquarium’s Center for Conservation (CFC), and serves as the Senior Biologist in charge of managing the husbandry of rescued and rehabilitating marine turtles.
This position is responsible for all aspects of marine turtle care, as well as maintaining adherence to all Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) requirements and guidelines in conjunction with the Animal Care & Health team.
Essential Position Functions
Oversees the STRC operations and growth, to include:
o    Oversite of daily operations of the rehabilitation of stranded marine turtles and facility maintenance.
o    Supervises, trains, and manages of STRC staff and coordinates the scheduling of rehabilitation volunteers.
o    Develops and implements new standard operating procedures as needed.
o    Provides the Registrar with information needed to ensure all agency permits and reporting requirements are kept up to date.
•    Supervises husbandry processes and protocols of the animal collection to provide ideal environmental conditions and optimize sea turtle health and well-being.
•    Manages the approved STRC annual budget appropriately by maintaining accurate accounting records and reconciling monthly trial balances.
•    Oversees securement of STRC supplies and equipment and maintains accurate invoicing and processing protocols.
•    Produces detailed STRC records and data analyses, maintains optimal Program SOP, record-keeping, reporting processes and upholds consistent communications with Main Campus’ staff.
•    Coordinates with state agencies to manage marine turtle recovery and transport processes, including:
o    Ensures staffing is in place to provide 24-hour coverage for timely responses.
o    Coordinates field response/rescue/transport of stranded/deceased marine turtles.
o    Collects data and specimens in the field and assists with carcass disposal, when necessary.
o    Assists Animal Health in necropsy examinations at the Aquarium and in the field including, but not limited to, clean-up and waste management.
•    Coordinates pre-release deep-dive testing with sea turtles from The Florida Aquarium and other rehabilitation centers.
•    Coordinates and helps perform the release of rehabilitated sea turtles.
•    Provides educational information to the public when responding to stranding reports or releasing sea turtles.
•    Coordinates and conducts public outreach programs, webinars, and talks and represents The Florida Aquarium at relevant conferences and meetings.
•    Coordinates marketing, media relations and communications opportunities as needed.
•    Assists with sea turtle related research that advances the Sea Turtle Conservation Program’s Strategic Plan goals and objectives.
•    Coordinates with the CFC Site Manager to help facilitate building repairs and maintenance.
•    Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Education, Requirements, and Technical Skills
Minimum 3 years working with marine animals in a rehabilitation setting. At least 2 years of which includes experience working primarily with marine turtles.
•    Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role of staff, volunteers, interns, programs, or projects at a museum, zoo, aquarium, or related facility.
•    Minimum 4-year degree in biological sciences or a related field, or equivalent experience.
•    Ability to acquire working knowledge of life support (including chlorine and ozone disinfection systems), water quality, and other husbandry parameters required to house marine turtles.
•    Ability to acquire in-depth understanding of FWC and Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (STSSN) protocols and guidelines.
•    Ability to acquire in-depth understanding of sea turtle-related conservation issues and opportunities.
•    Ability to learn and utilize the aquarium’s animal record keeping systems (Species360).
•    Knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
•    Must be willing and able to obtain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
•    Flexibility in working weekends, evenings, and holidays.
•    Available for on-call emergencies.
