Occupational Health Nurse Specialist Job Description OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSE SPECIALIST

POSITION PURPOSE
Provides comprehensive worksite based health surveillance, injury and illness prevention, triage and/or treatment, first responder quality control including AED usage, preplacement evaluations, health and safety education (including international travel health where applicable), and case management services to protect and restore employees’ health.
CUSTOMERS AND CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS
· Key customers include the employees and business units supported by this OHN.
· Other customers include members of Health Services, Benefits, Human Resources, Occupational Health and Safety, and Risk Management.
· External customers include community health care providers, vendors, EAP providers, and regulatory agencies.
· Customers require confidential, professional, prompt, courteous, convenient, cost effective care, communication, collaboration, and case management.
· External customers expect appropriate referrals along with clear concise information and help in facilitating the return to work process.
SCOPE
· This position operates in an independent nursing role/responsibility with customers under the scope of a state license. The incumbent also operates in a collaborative practice model with other OHN’s and members of the Health Services team.
· Primary responsibilities for this position include injury/illness assessment, triage treatment and continuity of care. In addition, conducting health surveillance programs, providing health education and safety programs, doing ergonomic assessments, offering case management and facilitating return to work services are all essential components of this position.
· Another key element is the preparation of all required reports and case documentation on a timely basis. Collaborate with human resources, legal and safety teams to comply with state and federal regulatory programs such as OSHA, ADA and FMLA.
· This position requires a great deal of clinical experience and judgment to operate independently and provide a wide range of primary and occupational health care services.  It requires listening and diagnostic skills, judgment, flexibility, initiative, communication (oral and written) along with confidentiality and organizational sensitivity.
· Incumbent should also possess a working knowledge of case management, epidemiology, ergonomics, Workers Compensation, substance abuse, safety, federal and state guidelines, legal requirements, employee work processes and shiftwork.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
· Legally licensed to practice as a registered nurse in Kentucky
· Baccalaureate degree in nursing, occupational health nursing experience or certification as an OHN is preferred.
· Certifications required in Basic Cardiac Life Support, audiometry (CAOHC approved), and successful completion of a NIOSH approved spirometry course.
DIMENSIONS
This position has a direct impact on employees’ health care, workers compensation, disability, and productivity costs by providing primary assessment, triage treatment, first responder quality control, preplacement evaluations and case management in the workplace. Accurate testing and data recording reduce the risk of non-compliance and fines with federal or state regulations.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
· Utilize assessment, evaluation, and intervention skills to monitor and treat employee health needs.
· Develop and implement health surveillance worksite monitoring and education programs which meet corporate, state, federal and OSHA guidelines (i.e., hearing conservation, respiratory protection).
· Coordinate case management activities to improve treatment outcomes, manage costs, and expedite a safe, timely return to work.
· Conduct mini health screenings for employees in coordination with the comprehensive health screenings.
· Act as an advisory for first responder programs to assure prompt, proficient response in all medical emergency situations.
· Provide preplacement evaluations that assure that the employee can safely perform the essential job components in a quality, cost-effective manner.
· Communicate with customers, team members, and management on current research, health trends, and successes. Be informative without being obtrusive or vexatious.  Communicate in a way that is timely, yet prompt; complete, yet concise, candid, yet accurate; clear, yet responsive.
