POSITION CONCEPT
Performs all aspects of constructing and maintaining Tampa Electric’s overhead and underground distribution system including switching and troubleshooting and operation of equipment and vehicles.  Work on energized systems and response to emergency overtime is required.  Must perform all duties following the safe work practices manual, general rules and specifications, and procedures set forth in the Company Policies. The Apprentice Cable Splicer accomplishes other duties as directed by the Crew Leader. The scope of this position shall include those responsibilities defined in Exhibit “A” of the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement and/or the IBEW Intent Book where the position is at a lesser rate of pay.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Possess a knowledge and understanding of the Safe Work Practices Manual.
• Construct and maintain underground residential, commercial and industrial electrical distribution systems, lighting systems. Additionally, install, remove or repair the following equipment on energized or de-energized lines in all types of weather conditions:  Network Protectors, Capacitors, Switches, Lightning Arrestors, Grounds, Pad Mounted Transformers, Conductors (underground primary, secondary and services) all aspects of PILC cable, secondary Hand-Holes, URD Switch-Gear, LBC Cabinets, Transclosures, Vaults, Manholes, Splice Boxes and Fuses, set and remove meters and take readings.
• Racking, testing and trouble shooting of all types of Network protectors, energized Network Secondary’s and Oil testing
• Utilize voltmeters, phase rotation meters, phasing tools, meggars, cable fault locating equipment.
• Switch, tag, test and ground overhead and underground electrical systems as well as perform some substation switching.
• Operate Ariel man lifts, Line trucks and UG wire pulling equipment.
• Respond to emergency and scheduled overtime and may assist in mutual assistance efforts for disaster restorations.
• Complete necessary paperwork, interpret work requests and construction information, and enter time.
• Attend and receive required annual training and/or certifications and assist in the training of new employees as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training
Required:
High School diploma. Commercial Driver License Class A endorsement. Must successfully complete each apprentice step and associated training.
Preferred:
College or technical-related education.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Required:
• Must have the ability and skills to pass an Operations Test Battery (OTB) and successfully complete each apprenticeship step.
• Must successfully participate in the 4.5 year apprenticeship program. Must have the ability to become proficient in TEC’s current work management software system and operate a mobile laptop.
Physical Requirements :

WORK CONDITIONS
Work on energized systems and response to emergency call-outs in all types of weather conditions is required.  This position requires mechanical aptitude, and the ability to make successful decisions in high stress situations. May be required to travel inside and outside of the assigned service area. Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
