LINE HANDLER - OVERNIGHT SHIFT - 6pm to 6am
Line Handlers are responsible for the shore side making fast and letting go mooring lines which are used to secure vessels to their respective berths. This is a heavy physical labor job which requires teamwork to minimize the physical aspect of hauling mooring lines. Job duties include handling mooring lines and assisting with the ship’s gangway. Other duties may include handling any ship stores, removing ship waste (trash), maintaining a clean and safe work site and other tasks or projects as assigned.
The job usually entails 24/7 work hours depending on vessel arrival and departure which can be anytime day or night, weekday or weekend including any and all holidays.
NIGHT SHIFT Differential of $1.00 - this is applied per hour worked in addition to the standard hourly rate for overnight shifts.
Line Handler Skills
Line Handler require skills typical of both a physical laborer and a detail-oriented manager. They must be cognizant of the handling of lines as well as safety procedures. Line Handlers will generally work in teams of 2 or 3 people and must be able to cooperate and communicate effectively. Some more specific skills needed include:
1. Familiarity of Handling Different Types of Lines – Understand the complexity and associated risks in handling synthetic, HMPE and wire rope lines.
2. Being aware of mooring line ‘snap back’ areas and areas where hands, feet and bodies should stay away from.
3. Teamwork and Communication – It may take a team of workers to effectively moor/unmoor a vessel. As such, good communication and cooperation between workers is essential. Good communication with ship crew can help to ensure a smooth transition as well.
4. Strength and Endurance – The job of a Line Handler still relies on physical strength to a large extent. Line Handlers will also be required to work in all weather, and should have a strong tolerance for the elements.
Line Handler Job Requirements
1. Must be able to lift 100 lbs.
2. Must have reliable transportation to/from job muster point.
3. Must be able to qualify for a TWIC card and Tampa Port Pass
4. Must be able to pass background check
5. Must have steel toe safety shoes
LINE HANDLER CREW LEADER
In addition to being able to perform all duties of Line Handlers, a Crew Leader must be able to perform the following:
1. Receive orders from customers and schedule same.
2. Have a valid driver’s license and be prepared to drive the Company truck, with up to 5 line handlers aboard to/from muster points in a safe and responsible manner, always responsible to maintain a safe environment for all.
3. In times of multiple, simultaneous jobs, be able to drive your personal vehicle to a job site (intention is to always use the company truck as the primary vehicle).
4. Be able to communicate effectively with his reports. This is not only verbally on the job site, but also be able to utilize electronic means (cell phones, texts, emails, etc.) to convey simple, articulate messages to assign line handlers for jobs schedule the muster points.
5. Schedule labor to carry out orders in a safe, reliable and efficient manner.
6. Organize and muster together all assigned line handlers at a pre-arranged muster station to attend the job and carry out in a reliable, safe and efficient manner.
7. Inspect all line handlers prior to dispatching to a job site to ensure all have the proper PPE, credentials and are fully capable of performing the job.
8. Properly fill out appropriate Dock Sheet with applicable information and turn in by the next business day for billing and accounting of employee man hours. they are ready for billing and turn in within one working day of job completion.
9. Review and approve all employee work hours.
